Hello everyone I'm XboxClown89, today I wanna talk about an interesting anime show. It was among shows that came with Toonami's return a couple years ago now. It is loosely based on the manga of the same name. It is called Deadman Wonderland, you are about to experience some crazy stuff here. A fair warning some of what I got to talk about may be a little too crazy or possibly scary to some people.
Deadman Wonderland
It centers about a middle school student named Ganta. After he had an encounter with the Red Man, Ganta gets sentenced to prison. It turns out a lot of prisoners developed an ability involving their blood. Yes you heard correctly, they made your own blood into weapons here. A lot of these inmates gets nick names like Woodpecker for Ganta.
There's a lot of interesting characters in the show too. The prison staff are down right cruel. You won't even believe some of the crazy stuff that happens in there. My favorite character is Crow who used to be a police officer. The OVA episode centers about him, it's an interesting episode too. Some inmates had tragic pasts, some of their stories is kinda sad honestly.
The staff made specialize equipment for people like Ganta. Which is meant to counteract their blood usage. You can even say the craziest people within the prison are the guards. One of them appears as a little girl but she turns out to be incredibly sadist. Of course, some prisoners wants to escape. I'm even amazed how much of this they allowed to aired on Toonami.
Yes there's some pieces that didn't aired but damn it was mind blowing. They even allowed more cursing with sexual content, no full blown sex to clarify. I also gotta mention the opening theme song is still one of my absolute favorites, it's so damn good. Eventually, the escape plan happens with some surprises. Such as the prison had someone on that team to help prevent the escape.
One of the leading figures in the episode itself was forced to become a monster. Forcing some of his allies to make the difficult choice. In all honestly, he didn't deserve that fate. The warden here is one truly sick character. At one point, they forced prisoners to compete in a competition. You can bet there's a lot of deaths too.
The anime itself has 12 episodes plus an OVA episode. Which was a nice length for a show this interesting. You actually feel bad for some of the prisoners. I think one of the more interesting characters is Mockingbird because he can mimic anyone's abilities with ease. Now here comes a huge spoiler, if you haven't finish the show don't read beyond this point or you can't blame me for spoiling it.
It turns out the Red Man was in fact Shiro. She also was the one that started manipulating blood. In Ganta's class, out of no where the Red Man came to his school directly to his class room to kill a lot of people. The show really doesn't hold back on it's blood & gore either. You will get to see how truly violent it is.
All prisoners wears a collar that will explode if any attempts to get it off, doesn't follow orders or attempts to escape. Didn't I say this prison was quite extreme with their methods? I absolutely love this show with an passion. It's not often I see blood itself gets used as a weapon in anime. Especially not nearly as much as this show for that matter.
