Bonus Halloween Blog #14 Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) review

Hello everyone I'm XboxClown89, I figured to cover yet another horror Tim Burton movie. This one is interesting because it's based on the 1979 musical of the same name. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, yes this too is a musical. I would say one of the more violent adaptations hands down. To me, this is one of his more recent works that felt like him in it's own way.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
The first thing I wanna point out is this movie has a lot of notable stars. Johnny Depp plays as Sweeney Todd, he's in a couple Burton movies. Helena Bonham Carter also in a lot of Burton movies. Alan Rickman is in a few Burton movies as well. Benjamin Barker gets some unpleasant surprises by Judge Turpin.

Barker does end up escaping changing his name to Sweeney Todd. He thought Turpin killed his wife ever since then. Todd ends up befriending Nellie, they came up with a twisted plan to get revenge. Todd would open up a barbershop in town, risky because of the judge. Some people ended up getting their throats slashed by a nice razor.

Todd made arrangements so when the bodies gets sent to Nellie whose below. She makes the corpses into Shepherd's pies. Which is given to people to eat now that's truly disgusting. Where Todd kills people at opens up a trap door leading downstairs. Eventually he gets a golden opportunity to get his revenge. Surprisingly, Todd having the upper hand.

Todd in rage brutally murders Judge Turpin. Then the biggest wtf moment shows up. There's slight clues through out the movie regarding this twist. His wife he previously thought was dead ended up being alive. Nellie tricks him into murdering his own life. Thus leading to another mess up death moment literately. Let's just say Todd was justify in what she's done.

She done that out of love since she was in love with him. But he ultimately loved his wife more. Afterwards, Todd willingly took his own life while being close to his wife. The songs are alright, Depp sang better in Corpse Bride honestly. I do like Depp's take on the character a lot. This is one of the darker more recent Tim Burton movies.

The story itself goes way back to 1846. There's a lot of adaptations of it over the years. Personally, I thought Burton done more justice with Sleepy Hollow. Honestly, a few changes would've went a long way. It's not flat out terrible, just a little hard to get into or wanna keep watching. You are mostly seeing similar death situations being done a few times.

Obviously, it does remind me of Edward Scissorhands. Which also had Depp in the starting role known for his blades. He also dealt with hair there so indirectly this could be seen as a spiritual successor to that. I still say Edward Scissorhands is the better movie hands down. I should point out Richman also had a similar role in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Sweeney Todd is clearly a required taste kind of movie. You may enjoy the blood bath despite most kills being rather quick. You may enjoy how Todd gets his revenge. I felt this movie had a few rememberable characters. Musical wise, we all can agree Burton has better musical movies. I will say this I will respect the effort Burton has done here, just isn't among my favorite Burton movies.
