How Similar is Midway's Mace: The Dark Age to Bandai Namco's Soulcalibur?

Hi everyone I'm Jack Red, I know this did a take on this topic for another blog series. But I can go more into direct details here. Just how similar is Mace: The Dark Age to those of Soulcalibur series? I would say they are similar enough to doing this blog entry. I grew up with Soul Blade on PlayStation 1 as well as Mace: The Dark Age on Nintendo 64.

Both of these fighting games uses weapons in a medieval setting. In a little bit, I will be throwing out a series of quick comparisons between characters. More importantly, both of them ends with defeating a powerful being. Of course there's a few major key differences in the game play. I just felt Mace: The Dark Age coming two years after Soul Blade or Soul Edge depending on which region.

I know there's a few short lived fighting series that had weapon combat. Even a few Mortal Kombat games went that route before they went back to the basics. Speaking of Mortal Kombat, Midway also responsible for Mace: The Dark Age. You can tell by the finishers since you can kill your opponents. You also can call by parts of the environment.

Some stages could come off as being similar to a degree but more different. Originally both started in the arcades to then get ported to a console. Sadly, Mace: The Dark Age didn't caught on like Soulcalibur series. Although it eventually left the arcade business while Tekken series still doing it. A lot of weapons are used in both franchises.

Lord Deimos & Nightmare are dark lords wielding a giant sword (Lord Deimos came first)
Grendal & Astraoth are both living stone creatures (Yes I know Grendal came first)
Ragnar & Rock are both warriors wielding an giant axe
Xiao Long & a few characters are bo staff users

Both games involves defeating a powerful being to gaining a powerful weapon. Soul Edge or the Mace of Tanis respectively. Mace: The Dark Age never got the opportunity to use guest characters. It was likely Soulcalibur series buried it early on. Majority of endings deals with those powerful weapons.
