How Similar is Capcom's Dead Rising to Lucasarts' Zombies Ate My Neighbors?

Hi everyone I'm Jack Red, I am sorta making an exception for this blog series. The games I'm talking about today aren't in the same genre. Although there are very strong similarities to make up for that. I will be comparing Dead Rising series to Zombies Ate My Neighbors. I haven't play Ghoul Patrol & personally I don't want to.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors was released 1993 while the original Dead Rising came out in 2006. I always noticed a lot of things these games has in common. I am just glad I can finally get this off my chest. Obviously both of them deals with zombies & psychopaths. Yes there is a few bosses in Dead Rising series that uses chainsaws.

Majority of weapons in Zombies Ate My Neighbors are also weapons in several Dead Rising games. You can throw dishes, fire water gun, rocket launcher, footballs, fire extinguisher, soda cans, tomatoes and flame thrower. Although the Sega Genesis version of ZAMN lacks the hidden flame thrower.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a parody of different horror movies in different genres. Mostly Dead Rising series is a parody to Romero Dead series. True story, due to what was on the cover of the original Dead Rising game. Capcom got sued by the company who owns both versions of Dawn of the Dead movies.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record does add a space theme amusement park to the map. You deal with martians as well as their motherships in Zombies Ate My Neighbors. The more mutated zombies in a few games are similar to werewolves & mermans. I say this because they are more directly after you. It does take more ammo to putting them down.

Also, they move faster than majority of enemies. I should mention, both Dead Rising 3 & 4 has several types of zombies. Both do involve corrupt scientists to a degree. Well Dr. Tongue was the main antagonist of ZAMN. In a few levels, you take on football players that are under mind control. The closest Dead Rising comes to this was a particular maniac in Dead Rising 4.

Both franchises have using different types of cloning. This was mostly important to Dead Rising 4 to help introducing a new parasite. But in ZAMN, clones sorta mimic your movements. They come out on a mutant plant. ZAMN is widely regarded to being a difficult game. I think I speak for a lot of Dead Rising fans when I say the original Dead Rising was the hardest.

If it isn't obvious by now, in both games you rescue regular people from monsters & psychopaths. Boss fights in ZAMN often repeat from a select few but only motherships doesn't need to be defeated. You can take them out by using soda cans but this requires finding a strict angle on the map with a lot of cans.

There is no insect enemies at all in Dead Rising series. The most common places found in both franchises are labs, neighbor hoods & malls. Dead Rising Chop Till You Drop on Wii added two zombie animals as enemies. To clarify, zombie poodles are essentially it's take on werewolves. There is no zombie parrots.

There is a tiger boss you could kill or tame to becoming your ally or give as a gift to your daughter. Sadly, a second player is the only help you will get in ZAMN. Honestly trying to find this tiger is almost like fighting just one vampire in ZAMN. Trust me when I say, they will take a lot of damage to make them go away.

Although there is motherships that are in the air. Obviously two vastly different things. You also get stuff to drink that grants you abilities. In ZAMN, it is chemicals including a randomize one. Funny enough, Dead Rising series has a mixed drink called randomizer. One shared ability among these is increase speed.

You could compare Ted from both versions of Dead Rising 2 to the giant baby boss. He isn't bright but you could sorta see the similarities. There is evil toys in several levels in ZAMN that tries to kill you & those you need to rescue. The closest Dead Rising gets to that is Slappy. No not the Goosebumps villain you wish lol.

Slappy was a mascot for a clothing brand that's found in one of the malls. He comes off like a giant doll since he kept his costume off. You can create weapons in several Dead Rising games. Obviously ZAMN has hazards not present in Dead Rising series like spikes on the ground. By pure coincidence, there is a castle inside a mall in Dead Rising 4.

No it isn't a real one but you can explore it. This is the closest it looks like those castle levels from ZAMN. I should mention, more sports related stuff are also weapons in Dead Rising series. There isn't many small enemies in ZAMN. The shortest boss character in all of Dead Rising is Evan the Clown.

He is the brother of Adam the Clown from the original Dead Rising game. He needed stilts to see above people due to his height. Obviously ZAMN has smaller enemies than him like evil toys & mushroom men. One surprising difference is once sometimes dies in Dead Rising series, they're dead. But there is a set amount of survivors.

It doesn't even matter if you save everyone or let them die. It doesn't affect which ending you get at all. But in ZAMN, you will start with ten people you need to rescue. Among losing the last one will give you a game over. Now you can continue playing after losing a few people. You just won't know which victims won't be present.

You can gain a victim back by doing well in bonus levels not including the credit level. Which itself is a joke on the developers of this game. Dead Rising series does do jokes about itself as well as other Capcom series like Resident Evil. Dead Rising series does have vehicles since you are traveling one huge map rather than a series of them in ZAMN.

Honestly, this was the big one for me. I keep noticing more similar things between these than anything else. I already consider Dead Rising series as a spiritual successors despite no one from ZAMN worked on any of those games. Yes you can dress up similar to Zeke or more ridiculous than that lol.
