Jack Red reviews Perfect Dark series

Hi everyone I'm Jack Red, I get to talk about what many considers to be a mixed bag Rare franchise. Mostly due to having one very good game to another being more recent being alright. Of course I'm talking about Perfect Dark series. You can get both of them on Xbox One either separately or together with twenty eight Rare games in Rare Replay.

Before anyone is like where's GoldenEye on N64. Don't worry I do plan on reviewing it. In fact it is my favorite N64 game out of all the games I played.

1. Perfect Dark (2000)

Perfect Dark at the time was quickly seen as a spiritual follow up to GoldenEye. Also likely due to how disappointing Tomorrow Never Dies was on PlayStation 1. This predates Timesplitters series by a few years. Although all of them shares many similarities. Basically most of GoldenEye made so great comes back in ways you will be surprise.

The multiplayer itself is a very unique experience. You could play against other people or bots or both. Hell you could work with a friend to take on several bots. In many areas greatly expands over what GoldenEye has done. To be perfectly honest, if you took the campaign of GoldenEye with this game's multiplayer.

I would say that's the perfect shooter to play on any consoles. You play as Joanna Dark to stop an aggressive alien race. Along with GoldenEye weapons, Perfect Dark has some of it's own. OMG a lot of them are actually very sick man. You have an alien sniper rifle that can shoot through walls or laptop gun.

Which could be fired like a rifle or turn into a turret. I also like you can alter parts of characters. In fact doing that does build up your stats in multiplayer more. There is a few bonus missions that do alter how the game is played. Duel has Joanna facing three opponents for each difficulty. It goes from someone you can beat with both hands behind your back to pure luck.

Well let's be more honest than that you are more likely to die before you even move. Trent has his famous golden magnum. Which means one shot it is game over. Speaking of that, getting access to it in the campaign can be a pain. I use the method many people use where you have to quickly disarm Trent in one particular mission.

If done right, it should be listed among all your weapons at the firing range area. This game looks & plays amazing for the console. A few years ago, Perfect Dark got ported to Xbox 360 that did a great job updating a forgotten classic. Perfect Dark does have a learning curve similar to GoldenEye. I would say this is my favorite Rare game in Rare Replay.

This was also one of the select few N64 games to have voice acting. OMG don't they sound very good for their time or what. You also can play coop or counter operative versions of the campaign. Obviously coop you and a friend play together. Counter operative version has the players going after each other.

One of the players gets to be an enemy. I haven't played many games that done this feature well except Resident Evil 6. Yeah a game with a mixed reception did it too. I will say it is done much better here. Perfect Dark has a lot of potential for such an ambitious N64 game. You wouldn't think that prior or after hearing the actual development was in their words dog slow.

2. Perfect Dark Zero (2005)

Perfect Dark Zero is a prequel to the classic N64 game. This was also one of Rare's first Xbox games.
For an early Xbox 360 game it has some good things that are often ignored more recently. I mean it sorta looks alright for what it is. I didn't care for any of the character designs especially Joanna's. I also wasn't crazy how they use some of classic Perfect Dark weapons in this.

I will be honest Perfect Dark has a much better campaign. Even the bonus missions were more fun than this. It sorta comes off being an uninspired, generic shooter. This game doesn't even feel like Perfect Dark at all. The multiplayer is a huge step up from the campaign but yeah I still prefer the previous game.

They actually made most of the achievements for multiplayer I'm not kidding. At least there it was a good move because I quickly loss interest in replaying the campaign. You do get several characters to play as. Unfortunately you can change their heads. The controls do take time getting use to. I even felt N64 game had notably better controls.

Perfect Dark Zero is not necessary a bad game. The soundtrack isn't exciting like you would expect from Rare. At the same time it doesn't flat out suck. Of course there's plenty better Rare soundtracks you could be listening to instead of this. Perfect Dark Zero feels like in a way to Duke Nukem Forever.

This maybe a possible controversial statement. Despite the long development period, Duke Nukem Forever to me was way more fun than this. Sure it wasn't perfect with it's own problems. At least it had a better multiplayer experience and a later second campaign that completely blows this game away.

The AI of enemies can be a little misleading. The overall accuracy is way better in the N64 game. Even the voice acting itself was way better. This game was a follow up to one of the absolute greatest shooters of all time. It is a shame it doesn't live up to that legacy. I will say if you had to play it please stick to the multiplayer.
