Friday the 13th: The Game review

Hi everyone Jack Red, OMG I can't believe an indie game made an official horror game. In this case Friday the 13th: The Game started in one of the most successful to date kickstarter money raiser. This is one of the most brutal horror games I have ever seen. Most kills actually from the movies. Friday the 13th: The Game in early 2017 got on PC.

Later that year by a few months it got ported to Xbox One & PS4. A few months before that another game called Dead by Daylight with people comparing the two. Friday the 13th: The Game is technically the third game based on the long horror movie franchise. Oddly the first three Friday the 13th games shares the title while there is also a puzzle game based on the franchise more recently.

I felt since I haven't played many games based on horror movies to give it a try. Here let me prove my point, my first game based on a horror movie was Warlock on Sega Genesis. Several years later I got to play Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick. Not counting both Mortal Kombat games with guest horror movie villains.

Friday the 13th: The Game is clearly one of the best I ever played. But the real question since the teams developing it aren't that big. Could it truly live up to the hype? For many people the answer is yes since it really reminds you of the movies in every possible way. This game really doesn't hold back in delivering such an experience.

Originally Friday the 13th: The Game was mostly an online game. Thanks to a particular update, you can play it offline. Which fixed a major problem I had with the game prior to that point. I believe eight players get to be a counselors with a ninth at random gets chosen to be Jason. Oddly in offline version, the max number of counselors at start of a match is seven.

Of course this isn't counting Tommy Jarvis since you can't select him in the character selection. To play as him you must call him. Either you or someone else dies or has escaped gets to return to the game as Tommy. You can play as most movie versions of Jason including Roy Burns from Part 5. Both sides has different stats, strengths and weaknesses.

You would think this would help even things out but there's a few issues that makes it difficult to enjoy. Mostly during online you are most likely to be a counselor than Jason. You could get a small group for a private match to increase your chance of being Jason. To sum it up, unless you are playing offline modes you can't guarantee playing as Jason.

Playing as a counselor is awtifully strict because you have to quickly get use to how they work. They can't do much to Jason in general. Yes they could attack Jason until his mask comes off but they can't kill him. In vice versa, Jason has plenty brutal ways of killing them. They made the one way to kill Jason very difficult to pull off.

Steps to killing Jason as they follow down below...
1. You or someone playing as a female character must locate Jason's starting point
2. They must wear Pamela's sweater
3. Whoever plays as Tommy Jarvis must be armed with an machete
4. Let the female character start the animation making sure Tommy is nearby
5. Finally Tommy delivers the killing blow

Some of this may sound simple but it actually very frustrating to pull off. At random, Jason's starting point could be a different areas on the map. This method involves finding a machete as Tommy. Most items have a random placement as well. Keep in mind, another player must be a female character wearing that sweater.

Now throw in how easily Jason can kill the counselors you have something that sorta felt rigged. The weapons counselors gets barely does anything to Jason. Even running away seems like a bad option since most versions of Jason can teleport or move very fast for a short amount of time. Friday the 13th: The Game makes playing as Jason a guarantee to win.

In vice versa, you are most likely to die at any given time. I should mention there are a few ways to escape. They could require help but technically it is possible to do on your own. You can get one of two cars or a boat back up to escape. You also can call the police but you have a time limit to wait. Before you have to figure out which exit you can go to escape.

Jason can stop a moving car in place or swim faster than any counselor in the water. I really didn't want to say this but it doesn't even come near to being balanced. I have more rememberable experiences from offline modes. Now I do recommend playing these over the online. Also due to the fact some of the weirdest bugs in the entire game appears here.

Honestly if they lowered the amount of counselors a little bit it would play better. For offline you can do matches or the challenges. Both of them you can only play as Jason. A weird reversal from the online portion. Jason doesn't get perks instead you can decide up to four kills & from level 113 to high.

You can switch the weapons between all the different versions. A couple free stuff already added to the game. Although costumes for the counselors and three kill packs for Jason are paid dlcs. In the challenges, there are exclusive mode kills that are some of the best this game has to offer. I am very surprised two couple sex kills made it.

In a sense these challenges are sorta shorten of an match with objectives. They made it strict to get all three medals. One thing I really would love is the option to skip intros. When you fail at a challenge you can't go further until you get at least two medals or you already completed all ten challenges. I do need to bring up a rather important topic since it led to the unexpected end of this game.

More recently, a lawsuit surfaced greatly impacting the franchise. Very quickly the team behind this game canceled the dlcs they were working to add to the game. In other words, you would've got to play as Uber Jason on the space ship map. I am glad they did offline portion since that's more playable to me for many reasons.

The only other problem I have with offline is you can't play as the counselors. Considering they have to search for stuff, run away from Jason and attempt escaping. You should get more practice with them than Jason. Let's be honest very quickly you get use to how Jason does things. It is the counselors you absolutely need the most patience & practice.

Look I am not trying to say I'm not thankful for this game. I am very happy to own it on my Xbox One. But you will have a difficult time looking over it's flaws. Also controls do take time getting use to since they aren't what you think they should be. Of course they are doable for the most part. Friday the 13th: The Game does the legacy of this franchise justice.

I really enjoyed most of the kills Jason does. Jason is simply too over powered in this game. I could accept the counselors for being so weak but does Jason need to be the terminator lol. Honestly I know some major issues won't exactly get fixed with smaller updates. I am not trying to banish their game when in fact I do like it a lot.

The leveling system is mostly affecting everyone including Jason. All of them share a long leveling system with the max being level 150. Most MMORPG games doesn't go much higher than level 100. Most stuff unlocked from it is clothes for the counselors. I do like how you can hide from Jason but you can be killed at most of them.

Most maps do look similar but there are a few things to help differ them from each other. The regular size maps are simply too big for that many players in my opinion. Even the smaller versions are a little big for them. I should mention Tommy has the best stats among out of him & the counselors. I do like how they worked the voice chat in.

If you are a counselors your voice chat works like a radio while Jason only can speak to those close to him. When Jason goes after someone, a music that plays in many death scenes of his movies. Kane Hodder played Jason in four straight movies from Part VII to Jason X. He came back to reprise the role a fifth time in this game.

Friday the 13th: The Game is technically a miracle it even come out in the first place. This game is exactly reliving some of the best moments of the movies. I would even go as far to say it rivals Mortal Kombat series in how brutal the kills are. This game like Ghostbusters: The Video Game did an amazing living up to it's potential.

Honestly it does have some flaws holding it back. At the same time what it does good, it is truly impressive. The graphics is some of the best I seen on Xbox One. When you play as Jason, you really feel like him. When you play as any of the counselors, you feel like you're them. The maps are easily the best looking in the entire game despite being a little too big even for smaller versions.
