Halloween 2018: Friday the 13th: The Game vs. Dead by Daylight Special Edition

This is going to be a lengthy blog comparison between Friday the 13th: The Game and Dead by Daylight Special Edition. Please take as many breaks as humanly possible while reading it. I do highly respect both of these amazing horror games. Considering Dead by Daylight is still making content after 2 years.

Even if I were to do a update blog on this topic. I highly doubt my answer will change. I also hope you guys enjoy it. The very last thing I want is for people to start taking it the wrong way. Look I make these blogs for entertainment purposes. I really don't wish to cause a game war over this. A lot of people has covered this in many possible ways.

Another thing I need to make clear I am playing Dead by Daylight Special Edition. Some dlc characters are already playable in that version. Right now five killers & four survivors you have to pay for. As of this blog, The Spirit, Adam and Victoria are the most recent characters added. All of what you are about to read is my take how I view both of these games.

Also if it might help you I did review both games separately in advance. Both had great usage of licensed franchises that a lot of people are for the most part happy with. This is as close to a new beginning of horror games. A horror game debate rivaling some of the best. I got to be honest this was difficult to put together even writing all of this up by myself.

Hi everyone I'm Jack Red, happy Halloween everyone. A few years a lot of people been comparing Friday the 13th: The Game to Dead by Daylight. Honestly I see plenty of similarities and key differences. This is surprisingly a great debate for many reasons. Both of them could be the beginning of newer horror games era.

Of course we're comparing a licensed game based on a long horror movie franchise against a original game. Which so happens to have several licensed characters from other franchises. Oh man this is going to be one crazy debate to decide which is the better game? I know not everyone will agree with both games having a big fan base.

On August 31, I purchased 6000 Auric Cells to buy all the current dlc characters. I have enough left over cells to buy Adam, The Spirit and the next killer.

Friday the 13th: The Game

Originally online where you play as the counselors while one player at random gets to be Jason. Sorta works a little different for whoever gets to return to the game as Tommy Jarvis. Several free stuff got added including some offline modes. Although you can only play as Jason in them. Everything screams Friday the 13th at it's core.

Dead by Daylight Special Edition

The Entity stolen killers & survivors from their worlds to be in it's own endless nightmare. The survivors must work together to get at least five generators up & running in order to escape. The killers must kill them or put the survivors on hooks as sacrifices to The Entity. Despite being more of a original game it still felt somewhat familiar to a lot of people.

Round 1: Survivors or Counselors

Friday the 13th: The Game pulled most counselors and Tommy from the movies. Mitch is based on another character from one of the first Friday the 13th movies. Each one has a different personality that does affect the game play to some degree. You can not select Tommy since one of the players has to call him first.

Among those that escaped or died gets a chance at random to come back as Tommy. The big twist is you could kill Jason. Although you and another player does need some stuff before attempting it. This is one of the rarest things you can do in the entire game. Tommy has the best status among them all. The counselors can find collectibles or arm themselves with whatever they find.

In Dead by Daylight, you could arm yourself with a flash light to blind the killer. You could get a perk to escape from the killer much easier or surviving the hook. Hell with the right stuff you can disable some hooks limiting where the killers can hook the survivors on. You must work toward to get five generators up.

The survivors has no direct way of fighting back. You have to be stealthy, quick and prepare to take risks in order to survive. You also could escape the hatch but there's two ways to unlock it. You are more likely to unlock it simply being the last survivor alone in the match. A lot of interesting survivors including some guest characters like Laurie, Detective Tapp and Bill Overbeck.

In both games the counselors & the survivors can use perks to better their chances of surviving. There is more major differences for the survivors than those of the counselors. First off like the killers, they also have particular perks for characters. Yes you could give them to other characters at a high level. The game makes it easier to keep track of your perks.

Also the controls for the survivors is absolutely perfect. I had trouble remembering the controls for the counselors. Honestly I felt like I could do it as a survivor than a counselor. You are very likely to die in online matches as a counselors. Survivors also have more clothes in game technically than those of the counselors.

If I had to make a great argument why the survivors are better than the counselors. They don't say much when the killer is chasing them. You could easily get annoyed by the counselors saying a lot of random stuff. Especially right before they get killed by Jason. Sorry but I felt the survivors simply had better strategy & structure overall.

Winner: Dead by Daylight Special Edition

Round 2: Jason or Killers

Let's be honest there is very strong similarities between both games when playing as the killer. In both of them the host of each match is the killer. For the most part, the survivors & the counselors can't do much to them except attempt escaping and running. In both games the killer can kill people. Although most killers need one of a few perks to be able to do so.

The only killers right now capable of flat out killing people is Michael Myers & Amanda Young. In Amanda's case she has two ways to kill people. Most versions of Jason play similar with not a lot of differences. Every killer in Dead by Daylight plays very differently from each other. Some of them can put down traps to surprise them.

In Freddy & Michael's case a different song from their respective franchises plays when you are closing in on a survivor. The Pig can put reverse bear traps on them. Which forces survivors to find trap locations with Billy the Doll sitting on every single one of them. Leatherface does differ in many ways to The Hillbilly in how he plays enough to be acceptable.

Some of them could cause a particular emotions to come out of them like The Doctor. They also have their own weapons despite the fact both The Hillbilly & Leatherface has similar weapons. They did make sure those two play very differently from each other. Some of the guest characters got a map from their franchise.

Jason does have a map of whatever level is being played while there's no map for the killers. Of course their realms is much smaller in size technically. Jason can sense the counselors at a distance to a degree as well as which building they're hiding in. The killers can sense generators that isn't working.

I should mention the counselors, survivors and Jason plays in third person view. But killers in Dead by Daylight play in first person view. Honestly after hearing originally the different person views were reversed in concept before the actual game. I felt playing as just one of these killers you do feel like you're actually them hunting people down.

Jason can morph that allows him to teleport around the maps. He also can use shift to move a lot faster. Some versions of Jason gets a shorter period of time while others get longer usage of it. If Jason takes enough damage his mask will fall off. In Part 5 Jason's case you get the see the real killer's face.

Some of the killers has their own way of tracking the survivors. Most versions of Jason has a different weapon. Most versions of Jason does have their own weapons. For example Part 6 has a spear that's actually a part of the fence Tommy pulled off. Obviously you can easily level up doing several matches as the killers in both games.

Jason has plenty of ways killing the counselors. Some of them are rivaling in Mortal Kombat series in terms of brutality. In my opinion that's easily Jason's biggest advantage against the killers. But the problem is Jason can't use perks himself. Although they sorta made him too strong to begin with. Most counselors can't do much to Jason.

Honestly by adding perks to the killers it does have more of a customization to them. Thus they felt more like your personal versions of them. In that regard it does help even the playing field with the survivors at the higher levels. Playing as Jason sometimes can be boring. It truly never gets boring playing as one of the killers.

Round 3: Leveling system

Both games has a different leveling system that does affect the game play. Friday the 13th: The Game is what you expect in most video games that has a leveling system. But in Dead by Daylight you need a lot of blood points to get perks, offerings and add ons for characters. By level 10, The Entity will remove some of them.

Higher up the leveling the increase chances of getting great stuff goes up. At the same time The Entity will take more at a faster rate. This means if you don't play your hand carefully a perk you really wanted could be taken away. I should mention the leveling system in & of itself being crazy. In Friday the 13th: The Game the level cap is level 150.

Most MMORPG games doesn't go beyond level 100. In Dead by Daylight technically your level cap is level 50. However you can prestige characters up to three times. Plus every character has their own leveling process compared to Friday the 13th having one big leveling system. This means you have to level every single character up to level 50 four times.

In Friday the 13th: The Game you can unlock more counselors and versions of Jason. During the long leveling process you will unlock more outfits for the counselors. Some versions of Jason does have an alternate color set with one of them being NES Jason. There are ways to speed up the leveling if you are patient enough.

At level 113 Jason gains the ability to switch out the weapons. I felt for a game with such a high level cap. They should've made that at a much lower level to spice things up. Going back to prestige, every time you do it. A new outfit piece becomes unlocked but all the stuff you had for that character is gone.

Keep in mind, getting perks in Friday the 13th you have to use points earned in modes. Three particular Jason kills do require you to be highly leveled up to acquire them. In Dead by Daylight, every perks has several versions that could greatly affect the game play. Very rare to ultra perks does require you to prestige your character.

I am really not trying to piss anyone off but level 150 lacks anything to unlock. I figured what they had in store for the level cap would've been amazing. In Dead by Daylight, blood points can be used on any character. Additionally two characters right now could be unlocked by gathering over nine thousand shards.

Which is a real grind to get up close to that amount for one character alone requiring a lot of matches. Honestly leveling doesn't affect Friday the 13th as much it does for Dead by Daylight. The bloodweb is rather simple to learn how to strategize for. You could end up with some amazing stuff to help against either side.

I do need to mention among gathering stuff on the bloodweb. You can get stuff to make the game easier or harder depending not only on what you're equipping but also those from other players. This means every time you level you could gain something that could help you escape killers or hunt down people.

Winner: Dead by Daylight Special Edition

Round 4: Fear Factor

Friday the 13th really reminds you of the movies. Right down to the smallest details including kills. I felt most intros do a great job getting you excited to play. Jason has so many ways to kill you it isn't even funny. Honestly this can't be as scary as Dead by Daylight. Virtually every killer plays on major common fears people have.

How could anyone compete with something like that? Don't get me wrong Jason can be terrifying in this game. I would even say he is better in that than in Mortal Kombat X. Sure Friday the 13th has more ways to kill people. But Dead by Daylight has a series of strange environments with the fog. Of course in both games a song plays when the killer is closing in on you.

In both games the killers are mostly unstoppable. You can attempt escaping them or hiding. The killers can prevent you from escaping easily while in Friday the 13th's case kill you in hiding spots. I should mention in the killer's place on every realm is a basement area with a special multiple hooks. You can't break these hooks no matter what you do.

In Friday the 13th, Jason's goal is flat out kill every counselors. In Dead by Daylight, the killers are giving sacrifices to The Entity. Although it is possible for most killers gaining an ability to kill a survivor. If we were only comparing the maps/realms, Dead by Daylight hands down wins. They cover more locations that could bring fear out of people than those of Friday the 13th.

I felt this is the toughest category to pick a winner in. Both of them has several things over the other. So it may actually come down to playing as a survivor or counselor. Which one for me was more terrifying to play as out of these two? Honestly I felt in terms of game play survivors are better balanced overall.

I have to say playing as a counselor is similar to most horror movie victims trying to survive. You get a good variety of weapons you can use on Jason. When you are running away from Jason it actually felt like those movies. I have to say playing as a counselors sorta works better in the fear department. They even show how scared they are just seeing a dead body now that speaks volumes to me.

Winner: Friday the 13th: The Game

Round 5: Graphics

To me both of these horror games looks amazing. One interesting fact a lot of people doesn't know or realize is both games uses Unreal 4 Engine. Despite this how the teams went about using it is very different. I got to be honest Dead by Daylight has that almost Telltale comic games look to it. In comparison OMG Friday the 13th looks just like the movies.

This game looks amazing for two teams working together that are still new to gaming. The team behind Dead by Daylight has plenty experience working with licensed games. I do got to say realms based from A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and Saw completely blew me away. I was very impressed how damn good they looked.

Dead by Daylight has a rather unusual look to horror games. In a sense Friday the 13th does in a different way. There still isn't a lot of horror games based on horror movies. The fact this game looks, plays and feels just like you are in those movies blows my mind. The intros do a great job displaying the graphics.

Even the kills are rivaling Mortal Kombat series. they're that good folks. Keep in mind, Friday the 13th does have bigger maps since more characters are present on them. Although there isn't much to help differ them from each other. It is still impressive they gave us such great maps. Friday the 13th blew me away just by it's graphics alone.

Winner: Friday the 13th: The Game

Round 6: Audio

This is going to be difficult to pick a winner. Friday the 13th has a couple of songs you are familiar with. The original soundtrack in Dead by Daylight is great. They also did license the Halloween theme. I already covered a great deal of what's included in this category. In Friday the 13th, sometimes you won't know someone else is dead until you check that screen or being close by as it happened.

I am glad Dead by Daylight made sure to let players know when other players died or escaped. Friday the 13th in it's challenges does have voice overs. Both of them did an truly amazing job in every aspect of the audio. I am not quite sure how to go about determining which is better. Luckily I just figured out which game has the edge in this category.

Friday the 13th does every kill animation perfectly. Some of them are very brutal making it difficult for some to watch. You won't get the same effect in Dead by Daylight from performing a killer's kill move. A lot of people made videos especially after the team added more kills to the game. These are horror games after all so I have to give this to Friday the 13th.

Winner: Friday the 13th: The Game

Round 7: Maps or Realms

I already talked a great deal relating to the maps/realms. I felt it should still get it's own category. Dead by Daylight has more variety of locations. The maps in Friday the 13th mostly stays the same. But Jason's home and stuff counselors are randomly placed. The realms may look the same at first everytime you are starting them.

Very quickly you noticed it has randomly been moved. I am talking the placement of killer stack, the generators, the hooks everything is randomly placed. This means there's no reason to try remembering the layout. It also means these realms will always been different every single time you play them.

Dead by Daylight does have currently more realms than maps in Friday the 13th. Possibly getting more very soon since they are going to add more characters to the game. Sadly due to the lawsuit the spaceship map isn't coming. Honestly I am very glad nothing from Jason X is in the game. Although I wouldn't mine trying out Uber Jason.

I do need to mention the maps in Friday the 13th even smaller variation of them are huge. Of course more people are playing on them but I still felt like it was still too big for that many players. In vice versa, every realms works perfectly for it's size. You don't have to worry about getting loss often in Dead by Daylight.

Winner: Dead by Daylight Special Edition

Round 8: Bonus stuff

Friday the 13th does have offline matches as well as challenges. Although you can only play as Jason, it does remove a huge problem I did have with the game. You get to easily choose your maps, how many counselors to kill and they're difficulty. I keep hearing easy in this game is actually harder than hard difficulty since the AI is constantly moving and usually doesn't hide for long.

Every challenge has their own intro to set the stage. There is a lot of new lines said by the counselors during them. The big surprise is there's a couple new kills only in these challenges. Including two couple sex kills that I'm very surprised got allowed in the game. By playing these offline matches does help you out when you do play online as him.

Now what does Dead by Daylight have to compare to that? First off there's several options about entering the game. You could play as a survivor, join a group of players as one or play with them & someone being the killer. You also can play as the killer right off the bat. In Friday the 13th, online it is random who gets to be Jason.

It is just as rare among dead or those that escaped to come back to the game as Tommy. Oh wait there is also challenges you could do to get a lot of blood points. You can buy with shards rare perks that could help you out. Right now they are doing Scorching Summer BBQ event. I just gotten Pro-Pain weapon skin for The Hillbilly.

I should mention another mode Friday the 13th has called Virtual Cabin. It starts up like retro gaming computers from the 80s. You get to explore this cabin learning more about the counselors and the unlockables. Sadly due to the lawsuit, all planned dlcs that was confirmed isn't coming anymore. But I do like the idea they have a mode like this in the game.

Of course both games has double experience weekends. I felt Friday the 13th does just enough to win this category. By doing these challenges it is almost like a smaller yet tricky variation of the game. These mode exclusive kills are some of the finest in the entire game. Although some of them requires both timing & being on top of nearby counselors that could spot you.

Winner: Friday the 13th: The Game

Overall I knew this was going to be a close one. Both of them has several advantages over each other. This reminds me of classic Resident Evil vs. Silent Hill debate. There haven't been a lot of great horror game comparisons this good. Both games must be in your collection. I highly recommend playing them on Halloween.

I think it does sorta come down to which are you are bigger fan of. Are you a bigger Jason fan or those of Freddy, Michael, Leatherface and Amanda? Do you prefer being one killer or several of them? Do you prefer a lot of similar locations or a great variety of different locations? It truly comes down to personal tastes.

I am going to confess I'm a bigger Michael & Freddy fan. I always respected Jason over the years. There is no question in my mind that's the best Friday the 13th game. But Dead by Daylight does come closer to how I imagine Halloween. To me it should be a good mixture of everything. I don't think one or two things in horror especially on Halloween will cut it.

Dead by Daylight is better balanced out of the two games. You get more maps, characters and stuff to play around with. The matches even going awhile doesn't feel like it's taking forever unlike Friday the 13th. The nice touches with Michael, The Pig & Freddy really made this a truly unique experience.

To me, Dead by Daylight kept giving me more reason to keep coming back to it. I will say Friday the 13th is truly amazing among horror movie games. Every killer brings another common fear of people into the game. Honestly Dead by Daylight brings a new direction horror games should go if in the right hands.
