Scary Movie 2 (2001)
Originally I was going to tell you all the movies they parodied together. Sadly it's quite a long list but don't worry I won't leave you hanging lol. Some previous characters including killed off ones have returned. Remember this is meant to be a parody film. A lot of notable stars including Tim Curry as well as Jason Woods.
Believe it or not, This wasn't the first movie I seen parodied The Exorcist. No that honors goes to a movie called Repossessed which is strangely interesting. I'll explain later on, there's a few weird endings to the movie as well. I never said they made sense, what are you on? Scary Movie 2 does show some creativity. I would say this is hands down one of the best Scary Movie films.
I am not going to lie you will see some truly mess up moments. Like Shorty gets rolled up by a giant marijuana plant or a direct parody of Poltergeist with a clown toy. I felt this is one of the best parody horror movies I ever seen. Of course we have Anna Faris back as Sidney Campbell. More recently she gotten on a sitcom show called Mom.
Scary Movie 2 doesn't hold back from the jokes either. For a movie that parodies so many movies it's surprisingly balanced. Sometimes parodies does too much that ends up not being funny at all. I would even argue some older characters are more rememberable here. There's the skeleton chase scene people gotta make memes out of.
You know I love skeletons. I would say The Haunting plot was done notably better here. It's actually better than the actual movie it's parodying. Now that's something rare to do just right. You can feel the Wayans brothers went out with a bang here. They clearly know comedy, this goes to show they know how to get people laughing hard.
Scary Movie 2 is a good sequel. It does feel like a very different movie from the original Scary Movie. At the same time, this massive change in theme allowed some great possibilities to happen. This felt like a fun ghost movie for what it is. I don't even have much criticisms because it was a great parody horror movie
Scary Movie was heavily parodying slasher films. This one is heavily parodying ghost movies with some other movies thrown in. Critics weren't a fan of the movie. Personally, even they often forget to have fun at times. Honestly, this movie deserves to be watched close to and on Halloween. It felt like a movie you gotta watch with your friends.
1. The Haunting (1999 remake)
2. Stigmata (1999)
3. The Exorcist (1973)
4. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) Which also has Tim Curry
5.The Amityville Horror (1979)
6. Poltergeist (1982)
7. The Legend of Hell House (1973)
8. House on Haunted Hill (1959)
9. House on Haunted Hill (1999 remake)
10. The Changeling (1980)
11. What Lies Beneath (2000)
12. Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984)
13. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998)
14. Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
15. Hannibal (2001)
16. Hollow Man (2000)
This also the last time the Wayans brothers worked on the franchise.
Scary Movie 3 (2003)
Although things started to go downwards. I still say I did enjoy Scary Movie 3. First entry to be directed by David Zucker. If the name sounds familiar there's a good reason for it. He's the guy responsible for parody movies like Airplane!, two Naked Gun films, and BASEketball. Clearly he has a history with the genre.
In some of those movies is the late Leslie Nielsen. Who shouldn't need an introduction if you watch comedy movies. He also appears in a story in Creepshow movie. Anna Faris with Regina Hall returns in this movie. This entry heavily parodies sci-fi and mystery movies. A lot of notable stars in the movie, it's a long list.
The movie itself heavily centers a combine plot of The Ring with Signs. Which was an odd combination but hey it's a parody movie. Let's try not thinking too hard on that. This is also the last Scary Movie to be released from Miramax before Dimension films. I should mention as a weird choice, the first two Scary Movie films are R rated.
This one is well PG rated film. Which meant it's heavily toned down from the previous two entries. Which I know already sounds like a bad idea. Surprisingly, it still ended up being a funny movie. On the DVD itself has a few weird endings, I do mean weird. One of them notably changed the aliens we actually seen in the movie to being vicious creatures.
They also parodied The Matrix Reloaded as well as 8 Mile. Personally, I felt both of those got parodied well better in the show Robot Chicken. Of course, this started to show why parody movies aren't as successful more recently. Yeah there's a lot of not great jokes in the movie. But the actual funny ones gets you by surprise.
Scary Movie 3 is alright for a sequel. A few notable changes would've went a long way here. The fact this felt like two movies happening at the same time kinda makes it tricky to focus. Which of those was the more important major event going on. I know you aren't suppose to take this movies seriously. I am just stating a fact that you may suddenly switching points of view leading up to confusion.
Of course, when it comes to random jokes shows like Family Guy done it way better in comparison. Scary Movie 3 tried without the Wayans brothers, I felt it was a better effort than expected. I actually respected it more than Joel Schumacher's attempt at Batman movies no lie. In all honestly, you may need to lower your expectations after watching the first two movies a bit to have a good time.
Scary Movie 4 (2006)
Let's get the ugliness out the way. This movie was released by The Weinstein Company. Yes the same company with Harvey Weinstein doing unacceptable things to people. Which led to the company getting bankruptcy. The same brothers also ruined movies like The Crow: City of Angels. Although, I still ended up liking that movie.
This also marks the last movie to have Anna Faris & Regina Hall, a good decision for a few great reasons. A lot of stars once again with some you won't expect. Like Charlie Sheen whose in a different take of his role from Scary Movie 3. Well that isn't too surprising here. Charlie is widely known for being on a sitcom show called Two and a Half Men.
Sheen ended up throwing away at the time the highest paid sitcom star over bad behavior as well as drugs. I gotta mention one of my favorite jokes in the entire movie. Sadly, it's also the funniest joke because it occurs very early on the movie. Which is already a questionable sign. It's a direct parody of Saw with basketball player Shaquille O'Neal trapped with Dr. Phil.
What made this so unexpectedly funny is it actually was the two real celebrities. Dr. Phil convinced Shaq to kill off his leg but he cut off the wrong leg lol. It's just how this occurred that made the scene so funny to me. From this point on, it's mostly missed jokes. The movie heavily War of the Worlds with Saw thrown in.
Which is strangely a combination that works. But everything else just doesn't work. I do wanna mention, Scary Movie 4 is largely like most recent parody movies. I even felt Scary Movie 3 had a more proper comic balance in comparison. I actually could pick a handful of jokes I personally found funny there.
I would even say this is the second worst Scary Movie film. You don't wanna watch the worst one, I'm warning you right now. Scary Movie 4 felt like a cheap cash in attempt for those who loved the franchise. Actually if you wanna be technical it's more at people who love parodies. There's plenty of great examples how to parody something that's actually funny!!!
Scary Movie 4 also felt like a major wasted opportunity. They could've went more creative but ended up going a little too far with the weird ideas. Like how they chosen to end the movie was just palm stupid. Not only that, this movie being so unfunny should've been a criminal. We watch comedy movies and shows for a laugh.
You know something is truly funny when you have trouble stop laughing. So I felt only getting to laugh just once too early in the movie didn't help things. I don't even think if they would've saved the joke until much later. You already given us the single best joke it offers. From that point on, the movie kept getting dumber as it goes on.
Parody movies are meant to be strangely entertaining with great jokes. This clearly isn't how you make em. Scary Movie 4 kinda felt like an insult. I also gotta talk about the main tagline "The Fourth and final chapter of the trilogy." Don't you guys mean a quadrilogy aka tetralogy? Scary Movie 4 is PG-13 which does allow a little more mature content than PG.
Sadly that made the movie a bigger disappointment than it already is. Scary Movie 4 tried too hard to be funny. You don't even feel like it's part of the same franchise either. At least in Scary Movie 3's case, it felt like the movie belongs there. I don't recommend watching this movie. There's a few decent parody horror movies out there way more worth your time.
Scary Movie 5 (2013)
If the last one felt like a cash in attempt. This flat out felt more like directly ripping people off. It also was made by The Weinstein Company. A lot of stars once again with some of them playing different characters. I previously seen that with The Return of the Living Dead 2 with a few actors. Of course, there's also Snoop Dogg who obviously balanced back from this garbage.
Not long ago, I talked about a very recent vampire called Day Shift that also has Dogg. There's also Jerry O'Connell which is strangely interesting here. The original Scary Movie film heavily parodied Scream franchise. Scream 2 had O'Connell making this an unexpected connection. Sadly, this movie is a terrible parody of Paranormal Activity series.
To clarify, Saw for a few years tried to release movies on each Halloween. Paranormal Activity series was the next horror movie franchise to attempt a similar strategy. It just wasn't as successful in comparison. Of course, Saw eventually got screwed by Saw VII aka Saw 3D anyway. Paranormal Activity also stopped by fifth entry releasing close to Halloween.
Following that they started releasing close to Halloween again. Trust me, talking about this is actually more interesting than the actual movie here. It's bad from the very start, it only kept getting worse. Have you ever heard the famous saying. "Stop you are just embarrassing yourself." Well that's exactly what the movie is doing in a nut shell.
Scary Movie 5 is inconstant in every possible way. You can tell even the team didn't care for the movie. I would even say this follows with most recent parody movies in question. Even Scary Movie 4 had one good joke. Not to mention, a better usage of a handful of people who were in that movie too. It's a huge train wreck that no one wanna ride in the first place.
Not only they were desperately trying too hard. They kept changing things the worst possible way through the film. Scary Movie 5 felt more like a random selection of jokes rather than a parody movie. This movie lacking the last of the original cast members doesn't help. But considering both their careers found redemption elsewhere I felt that was for the better.
Scary Movie 5 in all honestly, isn't just a disaster. It strongly felt like they only made it for money. Of course, most attempts fails horribly. This is no exception to that, Scary Movie 5 isn't even worth mentioning to the first three films. It's also no wondered why Marlon Wayans created A Haunted House series indirectly to make fun of the later Scary Movie films.
Shorty may often get high, this time clearly knew those movies weren't the best. I'm glad the Wayans brothers found success following Scary Movie 2. Yeah they had some mistakes who doesn't. Even the worst movie they starred was way better than Scary Movie 5. Now that's really saying something folks. Scary Movie 5 is just so bad it isn't even good quality, no it's flat out terrible!!!
