Hello everyone I'm XboxClown89, today I wanna talk about one of my absolute favorite horror shows of all time. Tales from the Crypt which originally aired on HBO years ago. Still one of the finest horror anthology shows ever made period. Most of it is virtually a timeless classic. It later gotten three movies with the third Ritual having a weird history behind the production.
Tales from the Crypt show (1989-1996)
Warning for those new to this show. These originally aired to allow everything. Which is rare for a horror show. I won't hide Season 7 aka Final Season was a massive disappointment. The only episode worth watching so happens to be the series finale episode. Which is the only animated story the show ever done, it's very entertaining stuff.
Seasons 1-6 are very decent overall. This felt more like a series of movies rather than episodes of a TV show. One particular episode, Yellow is longer in length with some huge stars. They go the distance with the unpleasantness as well as creativity. Keep in mind, most of this was directly being pulled by older horror comic books.
The Crypt Keeper himself has to be the single most entertaining host of a horror show in history. This guy is absolutely crazy with rememberable lines. A fact about parts of his face, they were removed from a previous Chucky doll used in an earlier Chucky movie. Very likely the original Child's Play since Child's Play 2 wasn't out until 1990.
I just looked it up, Child's Play 2 came out a few months after Season 2 ended. Now you know why parts of his face is kinda familiar. Plenty of great stars across the entire show. Sadly actors like the late Sr. Bob Hoskins and Daniel Craig, years before he even was James Bond. They even had Christopher Reeves best known for playing Superman in a few movies.
I am not going to sugar coat how much of this quickly becomes nightmare fuel. There's some truly mess up parts like a woman while having sex had the same disease her boyfriend was tricked into getting. In order to get revenge against his mentor who secretly wanted her for himself. One of my personal favorite episodes is Cutting Cards
OMG, this takes hatred for people to a totally new level. Two gamblers really dislike each other. They attempted all kind of horrific gambling games. In the end, neither is able to do anything. Even the guy who voices Chucky, Brad Dourif himself appeared in an episode too. The voice actor for The Crypt Keeper in a particular episode plays a character in that story of con people.
I strongly felt how they went about recreating these stories was virtually flawless. Except for Season 7 because when they were forced to move to London. They loss a lot of numbers for stars they could've contacted for the show in the process. They had to use actors from that location which kinda affected some of the themes more often than not.
Tales from the Crypt is a show that takes itself incredibly seriously. In all honestly, it's one of a very few horror anthology shows that holds up as a timeless classic. Not only that, it also can be rightfully compared to The Twilight Zone. The classic version since I haven't seen the newer shows based on that. It doesn't matter because both these shows are way better than those.
They even gotten Arnold Schwarzenegger to direct a particular episode. Yes the man himself does cameo in the same episode too. They even had Joe Pesci back when he was acting in a lot of stuff in the 90s. You would be surprised some of the people who starred in this. Let me bring up another person I recently discussed in a previous blog entry, Tim Curry.
In an episode, Tim Curry played an family. Yes even the mom & daughter characters. WOW, somehow Curry pulls it off amazingly well. Yes there's the sex scene the less said, the better. I felt this show is exactly what you want in a horror show. It's exactly what you need in a Halloween show too. Tales from the Crypt has a few spin off shows but they never matched the success this had.
I don't have much criticism other than what I already talked about. Tales from the Crypt is in all honestly a very decent horror show. All of these horror stories including a weird prequel surprise of The Crypt Keeper himself. You just gotta keep on watching the hell out of it. Just don't watch Season 7, you will be happy for hours.
