Army of the Dead (2021)
This was directed by Zack Snyder, who previously done Dawn of the Dead (2004) film. Snyder is also responsible for 300 series as well as a lot of movies in DC Extended Universe. There's some notable stars in the movie too like Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Theo Rossi, and Garret Dillahunt respectively. I should mention, this is over two hours zombie movie.
Surprisingly, it worked for a movie that long. The movie centers on an dangerous operation. Scott has to get a team together to head into an abandoned casino to collect money. The problem is that section of the location is filled with smart zombies. These zombies are capable of thinking allowing them to use their increased stats effectively against humans.
One person left before the job even begins. I will say this is one awesome group of survivors. Most of them can handle some intense situations with zombies. Scott's daughter forced herself onto their mission because she was searching for a mom who sneaked out the camp thanks to Lilly. Speaking of her, she pulls an unexpected move when she tricked Burt into joining them.
No one within the group knew why they needed one more person. Then it happened she screwed Burt over by allowing him to be traded with the queen zombie. Basically, this trade was done so no zombies would attack them during their mission. It was during the mission, they were joined by Martin whose head of security for Tanaka.
A few unpleasant surprises occurs during the mission making things worse. The location they were heading to was scheduled to be bombed ended up getting moved up having less an hour left. Which forced the team to rush the mission then escape. It turns out Martin wanted to collect the queen zombie's head. Which directly cancels the agreement they had with the zombies.
This greatly pissed their leader off, he sends in his army to the casino. I loved he has a zombie horse as well as a zombie white tiger. If that wasn't bad enough, they had a few major issues regarding the valve. There were some deadly traps, they had to get a little creative about it. The safe cracker had to be very top of unlocking a complex vault.
He had a handful of opportunities to attempt opening the vault. The pilot herself had problems getting the helicopter ready to go. There's some brutal deaths on both sides here. One scene, it's mind blowing how many zombies they were capable of putting onscreen at once. To me, it reminded me of several areas within Dead Rising series filled with zombies like that.
Scott wanted to try making things right with his daughter. He didn't notice in time, another team member was in love with him. Just think if they had dealt with Martin earlier. They would've had a successful mission. The leader zombie nearly killed what was left of the team. Sadly leading to another sad moment.
This felt like a spiritual successor to his version of Dawn of the Dead. Honestly, I felt everyone was done amazingly well. I was a little worried among seeing Snyder's name because of Batman v. Superman movie. I have major problems with that DC movie. Back to this, I do respect this was his tribute to Romero's Dead series.
This felt like Gears of War with zombies. Considering one of then had a huge saw as a weapon. I felt that statement is justified here. Army of the Dead is surprisingly good for a movie of it's length. It just nails the perfect ratio of everything especially for a zombie movie. I really couldn't ask for more, I felt very happy with the actual film.
