Hello everyone I'm XboxClown89, it's time to bring out the big guns here. I am going to talk about one of my favorite overrated anime shows ever. To clarify, I often would stay away from those. However this particular one quickly caught my attention for a couple reasons. I am here to review Death Note, this one has a high body count too.
Death Note
Before I even dive right in, I don't plan on reviewing all the movies. I will say the manga series is quite great in it's own right. Death Note is about a high school student named Light. During a walk, a mysterious note book fell to the ground. Out of curiosity, he picks it up & looks at it. At first among reading the rules, he didn't believe Death Note would kill people by simply writing their names down.
Light decides to give it a test thus does end up killing someone. Very quickly, these mysterious deaths caught the attention of a detective known only as L. A good amount of the first half is an interesting game of wits. Not long after using the note book, a shinigami named Ryuk meets him. Light originally had good intentions in using the note book.
Some of these deaths quickly got labeled as Kira. Eventually getting the attention of Misa, whose a celebrity. She actually the dumbest Death Note character according to the data book. Due to a shinigami breaking his kind's rule, all the lives he had went to her. She also met a deal with another shinigami named Rem to gain eyes of a shinigami but loss half her life span.
This allows the user to just needing to see the faces of their target. Death Note itself has a lot of rules which some of them got tested. Like when Light tested to see what he could arrange within a very short period of time. Keep in mind, whoever name gets written down. They are going to die with the default death method being heart attack.
I should point out even using this note book once, your soul will not go to Heaven or Hell. This is because when the user dies, their soul goes directly to the shinigami whose currently keeping the note book. yes this includes if that shinigami stolen it from another shinigami. The only way to see an shinigami is touching any piece of the note book even a small torn off piece.
As stated earlier, eventually things gets more complex yet interesting. Light is responsible for so many deaths, I don't think even the two guys responsible making the manga series knows how many. Yeah I gotta mention that Tsugumi Ohba wrote the story while Takeshi Obata made the illustrations we see. These two later worked together again with the manga series, Bakuman and Platinum End respectively.
Obata also worked on Castlevania: Judgment. So if you wondered why the Castlevania characters look suddenly like Death Note ones, you know why now. Of course, I got to talk about the very moment that upset a lot of people. Even to the point, they left right after it happened. Light does end up taking out L with a surprising deception strategy.
Sadly all of that led to Light becoming evil. There were times, Light tricked people into helping him in some way. Like this one guy didn't even realize he got played up to his death. There's another man who directly helps Light but eventually both of them got caught. Which wouldn't had happened if it weren't for Mello.
It turns out there were two people considered to be L's successor. Near who has strong similarities to L himself. Mello was the emotionally, unpredictable out of the two. He even started his own operation to hid himself from Near as well as Kira. In other words, Mello became a criminal partly due to jealous towards Near.
He also was the one to fully figure the entire case out before his death. Yes, he did plan on getting killed by Light. These two were among the smartest characters too. I should also point out both Near & L so happens to have my disorder too. Light gets wounded then requests Ryuk to help him out. Instead Ryuk simply wrote his name down.
Let's be honest, there's no way any shinigami would've waited until Light got out. I should point out, Ryuk loves apples from the human world. Yes we do get to see what apples from his realm looks like, they're already rotten. Light got so trusted by the police, they were very surprised he turned out to be Kira.
What may started to change the world for the better. Ultimately transformed someone into a true monster. This note book does kill anyone in the world no matter how far they are from you. Which makes this particular note book among the scariest concepts in all of anime. I do agree from L's death, the story did notably start to not be as good but still far from being terrible.
To me, I was such a huge L fan. They had the balls to kill such an interesting character off the way they did. L was the smartest character according to the data book. I would say this rivalry due to being more of a game of cat & mouse rather than by fists was more interesting to watch it play out. You knew L was dangerously close while Light kept making difficult to pull off strategies.
This even included giving up ownage of the note book. In order, for someone else to temporary be Kira to be allowed free from L. I will briefly mention some stuff from the manga that's likely never going to get animated. The last chapter in the manga shows up a year from Light's death with Near being the new L.
There's another chapter taking place a few years later with a new Kira but it's kinda alright. This person kept killing people asking to get killed then they use it on themselves. In other words, the problem eventually solved itself. I will say the show itself is decent in it's own right. Overrated well yeah but it's still very interesting to see things play out the way they do.
In all honestly, Death Note is a classic. I don't think it quite earned the right to be called a timeless classic though. Sure, it's very different from a lot of manga series of it's time. Not only that, there's so many deaths within the story it's insane. We do see scenes of Light quickly writing down names, we do get to see people dies from those.
Death Note has some interesting twists through out the story. I actually loved how they chosen to portrayed shinigamis as well. Yes, this is heavily a law enforcement story. Light does become an detective like his dad. You kinda felt sorry for people like his dad because he never knew Kira so happens to be his own son.
Light had access to the criminal database. Which made finding names for his targets much easier. Light was smart enough to trick Rem into killing herself by saving Misa. Personally, I don't care for Misa myself. Overall, it's an interesting story that may gotten a little too over hyped. At the same time, you are still likely going to have fun watching.
