The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Although this is a Tim Burton movie, he didn't directly this. He was working on Ed Wood and likely Mars Attacks! around this time. This is a stop motion animation movie. Which was commonly used for classic Christmas specials. Burton later uses it in Corpse Bride, which often is considered a spiritual successor to this movie.
Even for a Tim Burton movie, the story is on the weirder side. Jack Skellington whose the Pumpkin King decides we should do another Halloween. But on Christmas which led to some crazy moments. Jack does have a love interest in Sally whose based on Frankenstein's Monster concept. Zero is Jack's ghost dog, this movie started a weird tread within Burton movies.
There's a huge debate if this could be either an Halloween or Christmas movie. Honestly, we got just enough Christmas later into the movie. So I say why can't it count as both? Oogie Boogie is essentially the boogie man you heard stories about. There's some scary moments that even made someone in charge question how the movie would do.
Just like Boris Karloff in the classic Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas special, it worked wonders. This movie quickly became a classic. It actually has a weirder history with sequels or attempts to continue the story. But we're here for the original that started it all. I would say this is hands down one of Burton's greatest movies ever.
Everything about this movie is so rememberable. The voice of Jack himself was in Child's Play and Fright Night. Both original entries in those horror movie franchises. So we already gotten something strangely interesting. This movie heavily plays into how some prefers Christmas being more Halloween theme. I usually don't care much for musical movies but this one stands out.
I still liked a handful of them including another movie I'm about to discuss in a little bit. I actually don't have much criticism because that's how well made the movie truly is. I say make sure to watch this for both Halloween & Christmas. In all honestly, this is something so out there that no one expected to be this beloved after so many years.
Corpse Bride (2005)
Unlike The Nightmare Before Christmas, Burton also directed this movie. Sadly this was going into his more recent reputation among his movies. Despite that, this is among one of his last good movies before that happened. Corpse Bride is essentially an unusual love story in a few ways. We follow the story of a man named Victor whose suppose to get married in an arranged marriage.
Surprisingly, these two quickly fell in love with each other. However after Victor failed practice for his wedding, he goes into the forest. As he was practicing, he made the mistake of proposing to a deceased woman. All of a sudden, he became married to her which gets explained. My favorite character is the woman that's inside her head.
Also you know how much I love skeletons, they are awesome in this movie. Yes this is also another stop motion film that works wonders. You quickly feel like The Nightmare Before Christmas minus the holidays. Corpse Bride also goes into the undead bride's story. She was suppose to get married but ends up getting murdered instead.
It turns out the killer in question was about to do the same to Victor's wife. It turns out her family was broke, they needed her to get married to fix that. Basically, they were terrible with money as well with other people. I do like how they showcased the afterlife, it seem like a fun place like in The Book of Life movie.
I confessed a particular song from that movie is our song. Back to Corpse Bride, I do liked Victor gets reunited with his deceased dog. He even was going to give up everything for his undead wife. Ultimately the right outcome happens instead. I do liked Michael Gough & Christopher Lee are in several Burton movies are presented here.
Speaking of Lee, he also was in that terrible Charlie & the Chocolate Factory remake with Johnny Depp. Whose the voice of Victor in this, Depp also in several Burton movies himself. This isn't his first starting role in a Burton film, that honor goes to Edward Scissorhands. I would say it does come close being nearly as good as The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I think one or two changes would've greatly impacted things. I will say Corpse Bride is a decent movie. It's a different kind of love story with many twists. You also feel better seeing the deceased spends time with their loved ones. This felt more light than The Nightmare Before Christmas. You could say both of them make up Burton yin/yang embodiment.
