I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream follow up

Hello everyone I'm XboxClown89, I didn't plan on revisiting I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. As in the classic horror DOS game. My old review was way back in 2019 a long time now. I guess time has little meaning to these protagonists. Yesterday, GOG updated the game to be the newest version. You know the same version that's on consoles earlier this year?

Here is a link to my old review of this game down below...

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (2025 version)

Thankfully I didn't have to buy the same game again. I wasn't expecting that to happen with this since it's not an Bethesda video game. Although Nightdive was involved with this newer version. This actually on a different engine from majority of their remastered games on KEX engine. The engine in question was later used on Beat 'Em Up Collection (QUByte Classics).

Not to be confused with Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle. Which so happens to have seven beat em up games as well. A brief summary how this game works. It's based on a story of the same name by Harlan Ellison. Speaking of Ellison, he voices AM an AI that's taken over the world. For it's personal amusement forced five people into simulations representing what some considers to be their personal hell!!!

It's kinda amusing parts of this concept later used in Saints Row IV funny enough. You get five characters to play as. The game actually allows you to do their sections in any order. The endgame will follow shortly among finishing up their sections. I also gotta say there's some decent voice acting. This newer version was designed to work with controllers.

Unfortunately my controller didn't work with the game. Which is just a minor setback since it's a horror point & click game. I love how each of their stories differs so much. At the same time, all of it ties in together because AM torturing them all. It's very sadistic of a concept as inhumanly possible. You also get a decent size inventory system.

I dislike when you are limited how much you could use. I know some prefer it to be more limited. Which does make some of those similar style games more difficult. Sometimes forces in some back tracking. There was some back tracking during my newer playthrough. You might be surprise some of the topics this game covers.

As for achievement/trophy hunting it's easier than expected. You can find plenty of guides to make sure you get them all. It doesn't even include an achievement/trophy for beating the game. Not to mention, Nimdok's section lacks achievements/trophies altogether. To me both of those decisions was rather unusual.

Then again this game is rather unusual to begin with. I kinda hope the same engine gets used on a newer version of Harvester. This wasn't meant to be a scary game. I do see ways it could scare some people though. This is more about some twisted logic than anything else. Maybe not as out there as The Dream Machine.

Another horror point & click game I need to eventually finish. If you wanna see some weird stuff go play that!!! Back to this, it will take you a few hours following an guide to beat the game. It heavily plays off a moral system. If you keep doing good things, it'll help your chances at beating AM later. But you keep doing bad things not so much.

Honestly, a great game that does such an system is Fallout: New Vegas. There's some complexity within it's surprisingly simplify design. Here's a game you could die in if you aren't careful. Thankfully for the most part you can take your sweet time to play the game. I always welcome that for games you have a lot to do before finishing out sections.

Yes this game held up better than I expected. This is a sleeper hit for the genre. There's plenty of YouTubers that covered the game over the years. There's some cool bonus stuff in the newer version. Nothing actually new within the game itself. You can check out some stuff like listening to songs from it's soundtrack.

I will say this game plays a lot better than what I remembered of the DOS version. I also wish I could figure out to make the game's screen smaller. A lot of stuff you gotta do isn't that clear to figure out on your own. Unless you played through the game enough times. Games like this I prefer to play em windowed.

Basically it doesn't cover the entire screen. You could easily look up stuff. To be fair, it works much better than the original version in that area. If you tried to look stuff up while playing DOS games. The screen suddenly becomes smaller. It doesn't fit properly when you make it bigger. Unless you know how to fix it.

Thank god I never had that issue with this newer version. This is quite faithful to the original version. On those grounds the original story this game based on. I think the author who passed away would've enjoyed this version of the game more. This was a great remastered of a forgotten classic. I do recommend more people check this game out soon.
