Jack Red reviews Celebrity Deathmatch

Hi everyone I'm Jack Red, as a kid one of my absolute favorite animated shows of all time. Always has been MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch. My grandpa used to record me episodes of it growing up. This show inspired me in so many ways over the years. I will be covering the original show, game and MTV2's reboot show.

MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch (1998-2002)

Originally they did a short for Cartoon Sushi that also had a few episodes of Beavis & Butt-Head. The very fight fight was Charles Manson vs. Marilyn Manson. Cartoon Network did a similar show around that period. Ever since Death Bowl '98 episode aired all repeats of it starts with that fight. Some celebrities including Marilyn Manson and some wrestlers like Stone Cold Steve Austin voiced themselves.

They went through three interviewers over the course of the original show. I got to be honest they sure put a lot of thought into these twists. All death matches must end with a death similar to ScrewAttack's Death Battle. So many celebrities has been parodied on this show. Some of the funniest humor I ever seen on any form of animation shows.

They also do different theme episodes like family, Halloween, fandemonium and a few more. Not many fights had more than two people fighting. Some matches had a lot of people with the Survivor fight technically having the most characters. Although Richard Hatch ate a good number of them before entering the match.

Fandemonium episodes involves allowing the viewers to pick matches among the selection to make happen. The most surprising among them was Beavis vs. Butt-Head. Although their show was also on MTV. Halloween episodes went all out with some of the best effects I ever seen. They made their own crazy cage match they done a handful of times.

Some matches has weapons placed in the right. Hell some matches added modifications to the ring. Like Michael Jackson vs. Madonna had acid outside the ring brilliant. This show had some clever writing to keep you rewatching for hours. It only lasted four seasons with Season 4 being okay alright for the most part.

They also did super freaks that involves combining DNA of dead celebrities. In Potato Khan's case by accident Stone Cold dropped a french fry into the mix. They sure do reference a lot of movies & shows for it's time. They also done some episodes where plans changed like the time they went to rescue Debbie in another time period.

Yes even monsters got to fight like Steve Irwin taking on Medusa. Who remembers the time The Undertaker took on a demon possessing Nick Jr.? They even put Rage against the Machine band against a robot no I'm not kidding. I am still mind blowing by Keanu Reeves vs. Brad Pitt. I am still very impressed they did a Matrix style fight.

There is even times where Johnny & Nick got to fight themselves. Like when Nick took a satyr back in ancient Rome. They also had a time machine allowing dead historical figures to fight. Not a lot of people know this but both Johnny & Nick were originally voiced by real life commentators. Mills Lane was voiced by himself with one of his last related appearance confirming he had a stroke.

Hell they only did one 4th of July episode, OMG that episode was amazing. Especially the main event between former present George Washington vs. former present Abraham Lincoln. This was truly one of the most entertaining main event fights in the history of the show. I felt the same way about their North vs. South main event fight between Ulysses S. Grant vs. Robert E. Lee.

They also done two giant robot theme fights. Oddly enough both of them involves several bands. I really enjoyed watching Jeff Gordan vs. Dale Earnhardy because they had modified racing cars. I still can't believe they did fights I'm surprised got allowed to air like Dolly Parton vs. Jennifer Lopez. There are also episodes of a different nature altogether.

Like the episode taking place at Congress or a fight ends up causing a tragedy nearly killing Johnny Gomez. I felt even the not so great episodes after better than what follows this show. They even did a comedy theme episodes like Bill Murray vs. Chris Kattan being one of the weirdest fights. They were parodying Ghostbusters & Monkey Bone, which further bags the question how much weirder it is.

There are divas theme fights with weapons in place. Actually the last one was one of the few times a fight started before all fighters appears in the ring. This show appeals to so many people in so many different ways I honestly don't know where to begin. For a clay animation show holding up to the test time I have the absolute most respect to Eric & his team for making it.

This show was amazing for it's time. Still among the goriest shows I seen at the same time the humors helps you out. A lot of creativity even in flashback fights. I should mention all of this was mostly done with clay. Honestly I am very impressed with everything this show has done. They really go the extra mile making the fans happy.

MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch game (2003)

Yes there is a licensed Celebrity Deathmatch game. I am basing my review on Xbox version but I noticed some versions are notably worse. There isn't a lot of positive things to say about this game. It is too easy to unlock everything. Some audio glitches heavily presented in custom characters. Yes Nick & Johnny's voices are in the game.

I felt the roster should've been a lot bigger than this. I mean come on it has celebrity in the name for crying out loud. Also Mr. T still haven't officially been in a death match in either show. All of it screams cash in every single part of it with little to no real reason to play this. They notably lowered the gore too, this isn't Celebrity Deathmatch.

MTV2's Celebrity Deathmatch (2006-2007)

OMG I really can't stand this reboot more commonly known as Season 5 & 6. Avoid them at all costs because they're absolutely nothing like the original show at all. I will say compared to Teen Titans Go & Powerpuff Girls reboot show, it isn't as close as bad. There is a good reason why the real Mills Lane couldn't do the role again.

He explains in a special when he suffered a stroke, his voice changed a lot. Honestly I have a lot of respect for that man. I am also glad he had nothing to do with this show. A different animation company did the clay figures promising more blood. To me the suppose added blood just doesn't look right.

Not even Eric Fogel the creator of the show was a part of this. Which means this automatically gets a red flag. All the jokes with one possible joke are pretty terrible. The only good joke was said by Rodney Dangerfield while on the way to the ring. I hate to say it only two fights to me are even remotely close to rewatching.

Rodney Dangerfield vs. Rob Schneider & Johnny Depp vs. Orlando Bloom. The single worst fight of this show is Chris Farley vs. Horatio Sanz. This fight broke a lot of rules from the original show. Yes on the original show the time machine was used during The Three Stooges vs. The Three Tenors. Except they were already fighting each other while the hosts were absented.

The point is they never up to that point used the time machine to bring someone who died right before the fight begins. Also if that happened on the original show then Mills would make Sanz the winner right off the bat. Mills ends up reviving Farley several times. Finally Chris goes for a move killing Horatio off.

To sum it off they allowed Farley to cheat with no real fight going on. By the time something happened it was already decided at that point making this match a total waste of time. Even a few bad matches in the original show was better than this. Oh wait there is another match in this version that comes nearly as bad.

This so happens to be the only match to be done on both shows. Shaquille O'Neal vs. Kobe Bryant was so great in the original show. WOW they quickly ruined the newer version like no tomorrow. Everything about that match was horrible. The closest second match in a sense to happen on both shows does involve Tommy Lee & Pamela Anderson.

In the original show Tommy Lee fought pornstar Ron Jeremy in one of the absolute most controversial fights ever. Pamela Anderson won against Rupaul in Death Bowl '98 episode. She later comes back to fight Heather Locklear with a twist. Pamela has to attempt saving her ex Tommy Lee from a bunch of hungry monkeys.

In a weird way they chose to put Tommy Lee against Pamela Anderson. Some celebrities from the original show got to fight newer celebrities. I should mention they attempted to try bringing more interest by allowing the viewers choosing fights to happen in future episodes. Only a handful of these happened during Season 6.

Oddly enough I did vote for Ashlee Simpson vs. her old nose match. Originally I thought she was going to beat herself up like a similar fight in the original show with Nicholas Cage lol. Nope it turns out they turned her old nose into a giant talking nose seriously that's not funny. They had a new interviewer but she was simply Debbie in disguise in how she acts.

Yes I know she was her own original character but they sure played on what the original show did with Debbie. Some of these fights had twists that doesn't even make sense. The perfect example was Ludacris & Cris Angel along with their opponent R. Kelly & Kelly Clarkson got tricked getting inside a machine.

This machine cut all four of them in half then quickly attached them together. In other words we got two incredibly different celebrities forced to fight literately together against a similar team. I really wonder what the hell have they been smoking because this would count as they all lose. In a sense, all of them died briefly to be revived by force for this fight.

Also they simply don't do this fight period instead giving us another dead historical figure. Stone Cold is also not a part of this show, oh man that really pisses me off. Most matches didn't have unique twists at all. Their reasons for each fight doesn't add up. Yes I know in some cases of the original show, some fights happened without that still end up great.

To me it felt like almost all of it was really not worth my time at all. They ruined everything about it, they didn't even do Johnny & Nick right. This version is an insult to us classic Deathmatch fans. Easily one of the absolute worst animated shows I had the displeasure of watching. There is virtually no reason at all to check it out.
