My thoughts on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ban from The Indie Game Awards situation

Hello everyone I'm XboxClown89, for a good while I kept seeing posts as well as videos. All focus on the recent controversy of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ban from The Indie Game Awards 2025. The fact people still needing to say something on the matter. I figured to fully give my thoughts on that situation. I mostly going to be quite ugly about this.

They fully live streamed their game awards show. Suddenly, they came out with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 gotten disqualify as well as banned from their show. Effectively giving the awards it's suppose to win to other indie video games. No disrespect towards Blue Prince, I do wanna play that myself. They have a key rule about don't use AI in video games.

A couple months ago, it was confirmed several hundred video games during a particular Steam sale used AI. Not only that, the game in question already removed textures originally placed by AI. It was a rather small usage of the concept. It would've been different if Expedition 33 was largely made with AI. Honestly, this easily could've been settle in private.

Even before they do the game awards show. This includes making an announcement the game can't be nominated with reasons revealed. In a post on their social media accounts prior to that. They also could've had the company responsible for the game to make the same announcement. As far I'm aware neither happened prior to that show.

Instead they planned this attack on the game. Purely out of being sick & jealous of the game. In other words they actually chosen a very ugly way showcasing that to the public. It also doesn't help some of their awards possibly came off racism possibly sexist. I will list those following awards to make a point. Those didn't even need to be in the game awards show at all.

1. African Indie Game Award
2. ANZ Indie Game Award
3. Black Voices in Gaming Award
4. Latin American Indie Game Award
5. Southeast Asian Indie Game Award
6. Women-Led Indie Game Award

This game effectively swept a few game awards shows. This might come as a huge surprise to a lot of people. I don't consider Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to be overrated. For something to be overrated, it has to not be as great as people say coughs Naruto. Expedition 33 and Stranger Things show were shows that surprisingly lived up to that insanely high expectations.

I don't even like how The Indie Game Awards goes about it's process. We barely have any real say except possibly throw out some indie games to nominate that's it. Which is technically more than a lot of those shows. I strongly felt the overall best game awards show wise. Hands down was The Horror Game Awards.

I even told them it was the best game awards show I watched all year long you bet it was!!! I recommend watching the later edited version of that it's way better. I don't care what sex or race people make games are. I felt someone from one side of the world could deliver a truly unique perceptive. On the opposite side of the world very true within indie games.

I strongly felt they done this on purpose. Partly due to being more focus on indie video games. Not as close as many people tuning in to the bigger game awards shows. It's almost like they chosen to go a more drama route to keep people talking about their awards show. To me, that was a rather sad, pathetic way of getting people's attention.

It isn't a cry of desperation either. They obviously didn't want to follow suit a few ways. Let's be honest, Expedition 33 isn't even in many categories compared to those other awards shows. The fact they directly attacked a game like this is a clear sign of being poor sportsmen. They should've just supported the game.

I'm not saying bend over either. What I'm trying to say is they clearly decided to go such an route for all the wrong reasons. I never seen such ugliness in any awards shows prior. I'm more willing to see some questionable nominees that's common in these shows. What just happened was virtually their version of Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars not sorry!!!

Such an situation speaks volumes that indirectly impacts the entire indie gaming community. I'm very sure a lot of those developers are very kind people. The very last thing they need is something like this!!! Expedition 33 even apologized over it's AI ban on social media. Although it wasn't necessary to do since they didn't do anything wrong here.

It's like being on trial you just gotten found guilty for a crime you didn't commit. But eventually get forced to confess with hopes getting out of prison soon. I know I chosen a rather ugly reality for an example. This isn't even about which group you are in high school either thing. Personally I wouldn't even care which one you were in anyway.

The Indie Game Awards just shown their true colors. I refuse to support this game awards show. I will continue to support indie developers that's not going to change. This sorta came off like the spoiled brat that can't accept something. In this case they were that brat to refused accepting Expedition 33 belong in their awards show.

Officially another option which also would've upset people. Just not to this degree would've been don't nominate Expedition 33 altogether. It would've avoided getting banned altogether. Plus they could've eventually get in with another game. It wouldn't even matter if it were a sequel, a spin off or another game unrelated.

Even Steam Awards that doesn't do shows is better. Majority of it's process is the gamers themselves. I may criticize Megabonk being in a particular category. Although, I did start to see how it could have that effect on some people. The Indie Game Awards is quickly losing creditability. Expedition 33 didn't deserve such a treatment.

We don't even know they secretly wanted Blue Prince to win or simply not give the award to Expedition 33. Regardless which one that turns out to be? Things aren't looking great for them right now. I'm sure they had enough staff to prevent such an situation from happening. I highly doubt the person in charge went against everyone for attention.

Just imagine for a moment that was the reason. This game awards show further lost creditability. People already not taking these shows as nearly seriously anymore. Once in a blue moon I'm looking at you Nintendo!!! You get some games that wins people don't like. I mean come on Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds should've won Best Sports/Racing Game award!!!

This would be the usual drama of these shows. What just happened here was very unexpected in comparison. The entire situation made them look like crap. I seen crap that looks way better. Now that by itself speaks volumes how disappointed I am. End of the day, I'm quite sick hearing about this. Unfortunately what's done can't be undone.

Expedition 33 wasn't robbed no the game was used as a ugly message to everyone. This game has insane success that no body saw coming. Very quickly became one of many greatest video games ever created. I strongly felt they chosen to do this. Deep down they didn't wanna bend to everyone else. They wanted to be this rather negative fuse box that's about to explode.

I could get somewhat behind they didn't want to give Game of the Year award to them. At the same time, Expedition 33 was essentially the best among that lineup banned or not!!! Removing such a game bags many questions. A huge one I personally have is if Expedition 33 gotten treated like this. What future indie video games could end up with the same fate?

Another huge question is how they plan on moving forward from the situation? I think they might need a more clear guide lines to some of those rules. Which easily could've led to this situation. Then again, they started last year not as long as The Horror Game Awards coughs better awards show. All of a sudden that situation making more sense.

They are in the early years of their awards show. They still need to figure some critical stuff out. Where it stands I personally dislike how they're going about things. I do agree there should be one for indie developers. Just within five years, I played some truly amazing indie games. Possibly better than so many games I played during my childhood!!!

Honestly, this situation going to have long term effects. They shouldn't never done this period. I wouldn't be surprise enough indie developers decided to not support the show over it. In all honestly, that's where my money going!!! The fact this actually happened is a huge slap to indie gaming as a whole.

I'm very sure a lot of them aren't happy how The Indie Game Awards handling things. Indie games should allow everyone despite things. Expedition 33 at the time of it's nomination removed AI from the game altogether. I personally didn't see how the game broken that rule. Even if it still was in the game, their usage of AI is too small to notably affect things.

I wonder if there's an Dr. Sheldon Cooper among em!!! I bet someone in the staff absolutely loves trains!!! Honestly, I am effectively done with this show altogether. It's going to take them doing a lot of stuff over years to possibly fix some of the damage. Then again, the damage already done!!! What more could they possibly do now?

Expedition 33 didn't deserve this by any means. I haven't even played the game myself. But I did moderate someone that absolutely loved it!!! I seen enough of the game to know it deserved majority of it's awards. The Indie Game Awards isn't really for everyone. They secretly are quite bias towards em. Even The Game Awards has a better overall process going about things than this!!!

This doesn't even compare to The Golden Joystick Awards either. This month is filled with those shows. I strongly felt it's easily the worst!!! They shouldn't done an show this year if they didn't wanna do it. At least doing this to Expedition 33 is exactly what it sounds like!!! Whoever is in charge needs to do a full 360 to keep things going or end it?
