Hello everyone I'm Jack Red aka XboxClown89, I'm a huge Metal Gear fan. It deeply upsets me Hideo Kojima got treated so poorly by Konami during the development of Metal Gear Solid V. I started to lose hope I may never get another decent Metal Gear experience ever again. Then came this parody/tribute game of that franchise called UnMetal.
UnMetal follows Jesse Fox attempting to escape from General X. They took a major risk by making it very similar to classic Metal Gear game play with an increase amount of humor. Surprisingly, it was well balanced in that regard. Honestly, one of the absolute funniest games I ever played. It is more like Metal Gear 1 and 2 from MSX computer than anything else.
At the same time, it wasn't a rip off of what was previously done. Instead it very much was it's own thing, very surprised to see that. There's no question a handful of these characters are parodies of Metal Gear characters. Like Jesse Fox is parodying Solid Snake with younger versions of Big Boss. Colonel Harris is a parody of Colonel Campbell, well you get the picture.
There's some crazy scenarios including a couple you get to choose. Yes you heard correctly there's multiple decisions in this game. Very few of them requires additional stuff in order to correctly solve those puzzles. It's mind blowing how funny this game turned out to be. You got a few bosses you would never face in any Metal Gear games.
Such as an giant eel, an samurai and an nuclear submarine. Like Metal Gear, you got to use your wits to get far. Even one particular boss fight is set up through the conversation. I actually found out about this game through a streamer named Smokaloke's Metal Gear marathon early on. I also bought a lot of stuff in the purchase including this game's soundtrack too.
I just checked twitter, I got a reply from the voice actor behind Jesse Fox. UnMetal is a game with it's own levels of complexity. You got some interesting boss fights with surprising decent voice acting as well. Drill Sergeant is easily one of my favorite characters. For free on Steam version you can download a voice pack with voices from famous streamers including Smokaloke.
UnMetal is broken up into ten chapters. Yes there's a chapter selection to allow you replay the game how you want. You also get some surprises you won't see coming on the way. This comes incredibly close of actually being an Metal Gear game. Actually way more than I ever expected. UnMetal is a love letter to those who love Metal Gear series.
You can save in bath rooms or an empty toilet you carry in your inventory don't ask lol. There's also some game play mechanics in their own sections as well. Like in one chapter you can pilot an submarine while another has a boat with an machine gun. The visuals are truly amazing stuff as well. This game is a huge surprise in and of itself.
UnMetal has plenty of rememberable moments people will be talking about for years to come. I really hope they make an sequel in the future. You get some clever puzzles you wouldn't regularly get in Metal Gear series. Like the wires puzzle or navigate an labyrinth. I'm not going lie even with directions getting through the labyrinth is a real pain.
I am really glad I took a chance on this game. It's witty, silly at times and it does try being serious all at once. UnMetal is easily one of the most impressive indie games I ever played. This concept was a huge challenge, I'm very blown away how damn good the actual game was. Overall, it is a very strong recommendation especially if you're a Metal Gear fan to check this one out.
