Return to Silent Hill (2026)
Return to Silent Hill is a movie adaptation of Silent Hill 2. Actually among several upcoming Silent Hill stuff mostly games announced a few years ago. I hate to say this might end up as the worst among them. Don't go in expecting it to follow the game well it doesn't at all!!! You have James Sunderland that came back to the town of Silent Hill to find his wife.
Those who already played either version of Silent Hill 2 knows the big twist. The movie completely skips the prison section reducing Eddie's role. I'll be honest, he was just there for a few scenes that's it!!! I can tell the director gotten the character wrong. Yeah you better get use to me saying that. Pyramid Head's role was changed to being another James Sunderland.
At one point, Sunderland summoned him to kill off Maria. Which none of this was accurate to either version of the video game. Pyramid Head's role in those games was to help James remember what he's done to his wife. Sunderland never had control over the creature. In fact, Pyramid Head would kill Maria twice in both versions.
Maria was among many creations of James from his mind. It's disappointing Pyramid Head was used in such a way not true to his actual purpose within the games. Angela never became part of that bed monster. Speaking of bed monsters, Mary appeared too soon in place of another boss monster. Of course, this took place inside a hospital further ruining things.
Angela was suppose to commit suicide by going inside a location burning. Which is meant to represent her frustration of sexual abuse from her family. Thus, making her a part of that bed monster didn't make sense!!! Laura was actually the only normal person among the characters. Originally an innocent little girl who befriended Mary.
The director decided to make the little girl a part of the grand scheme. Her name was taken from Mary's full name. She was carrying a monster baby which wasn't even from those Silent Hill games. Like Maria, she was another version of Mary to force James to remember what happened. This actually similar to two Walters in Silent Hill 4: The Room.
The adult Walter was a spirit killing people for a ritual. But his child self often showed up. Let's put it this way it made sense where Walter was split up like that. Laura changed to being another version of Mary doesn't make any sense!!! To make it even worst, the same actress played the same character in Silent Hill 2 Remake.
Believe it or not, the director realized too late she already played the character before after filming was done. James meets with Mary on top of the hotel they stayed at. Which made no sense since the beginning of the end was suppose to be triggered in the room they stayed in. They used an unneeded elevator scene with Maria to trigger it instead was bad writing.
You can tell when the movie reaches the hospital. The overall pacing suddenly goes a little too fast. Yeah it reached the point I wished the director would've slowed things down a little bit. Obviously not looking great here at all. We still haven't gone to what I really did not like? The movie recreated In Water Ending to only undo things with starting the story over.
Yeah we get to see James meets Mary the same way again leading right back to the same exact events. As if James now trapped inside his personal hell to relive all of this for an eternity. Going back to Mary, they changed her story too much. Mary was originally just a normal woman that's it. They changed her to being related to the founders of the town!!!
When did this suddenly became Silent Hill: Homecoming? To clarify what I'm talking about here. In that Silent Hill game, four families often done rituals. However due to an unexpected accident, they couldn't properly complete the ritual. Which triggered the events of that Silent Hill game. Not only that, Mary was in a cult!!!
Yes some Silent Hill stories involved a cult. Mostly any of them that had Alessa. But Silent Hill 2 never involved that cult!!! It's almost like how could the director make this more interesting? Oh yeah let's make Mary a part of the same family that founded the town of Silent Hill that was in a cult good idea!!! In all honestly, these changes further took away what was supposed to be there.
Silent Hill was meant to have more normal characters. This wasn't how any game teams done the concept. It was revealed Mary asked her husband to end her life. This wouldn't be an issue if that were in the games prior. Unfortunately it's not, James murdered his wife. He couldn't take her suffering any longer that led to crossing the line.
I didn't like how many characters was portrayed at all!!! I could excuse no prison if everything else was done a lot better. I also couldn't stop noticing how ash on several things looked too much like snow. No really I don't know how you could screw that up in a movie. Especially from the same director that given us the original live action Silent Hill movie.
Where stuff like this was done much better as well as more faithful to the source material. There's an spider monster that gets killed by Pyramid Head. This wasn't even from any Silent Hill game by Team Silent. Who developed the first four Silent Hill games. I didn't like any monster appearances in the movie.
The director made the roaches sorta like small people. They were just giant roaches like in the original Silent Hill movie he directed!!! I disliked Pyramid Head's appearance easily among my least favorites. Even the nurses seems a bit off. The nurses any variation is among the most recurring monsters in the series.
People sure love cosplaying as the nurses. Even the worst among those I seen looked better than the ones in this Silent Hill movie!!! The director recreated a couple moments from the game. I have no issue with that if it's done right. But some of them just felt wrong or rushed to work. Sunderland kept calling his doctor which wasn't in either version of the game.
I will be more direct Silent Hill: Revelation. Which was a rather loose adaptation of Silent Hill 3. Among my favorite Silent Hill games I played. I even liked more than both versions of Resident Evil 3. Somehow that's more faithful to the source material than this!!! I absolutely hated how the director went about the story.
The CGI usage wasn't used well especially in a handful of scenes. People would think the monsters making it difficult to look at. No some of those monsters looked terrible in a bad way!!! Yes James does get a letter from Mary to come look for her just like in those games. But not even once he looked at the letter later on to realize nothing was on the letter.
Which easily could've been something to help start a scary scene. Pyramid Head was barely in the actual movie. A stupid change was James fought back against the nurses. Then one of them gets inside the elevator to stab Maria. I have a few major issues with this change to the story. Originally Pyramid Head was suppose to kill Maria to help James remembered what happened to his wife.
This change took away from the overall procession Sunderland had in the story. At the same time, moments like this had a much deeper reason for happening. Basically this made the moment pointless since Sunderland could've started the elevator. Thus, prevented Maria from getting stab it felt forced as well as rushed.
If Eddie was never going to be a notable role in this version of the story. Why bother adapting the character in the movie in the first place? Eddie was suppose to become insane. Then Sunderland gets forced to kill him in self defense. But the guilt led to a second Pyramid Head showing up. This also prevented that from happening in the movie.
Somehow this director nailed it the first time. Then dropped the ball hard on his second Silent Hill movie!!! It doesn't even matter this is technically the third Silent Hill movie. What does matter is the changes to the characters along with the story make it incredibly less based on the game. Hell someone could edit out a lot of scenes to make it a short film.
I felt that version would've worked way better than this!!! It's a real shame we finally gotten a movie based on Silent Hill 2. Easily one of the absolute greatest survival horror games ever made. Twice if you count in it's remake. The director threw salt on the wound it's still burning!!! I even felt Silent Hill 2 through Silent Hill HD Collection Xbox 360 version.
Which couldn't be fixed that had some notable technical issues was somehow better than this!!! This is officially the worst version of Silent Hill 2 I had the displeasure seeing!!! I really can't say anything positive about the movie. The few things I came close to quickly ruined in many ways. Also James wouldn't have the power to kill Angela and the bed monster off like that!!!
It actually makes no sense since Angela suffered sexual abuse by her family. Therefore, shouldn't that been Angela not James? If it were her, I doubt she would've end things like that. Last I checked, Angela was an actual person in the games. James shouldn't had any control over that bed monster whatsoever!!! This movie rushed a bit too much that automatically ruined anything that could've saved it.
Return to Silent Hill should've been the come back many Silent Hill fans were waiting for. Instead just like Mary twice in the same movie, I'll be waited for my ride to get here. Another confusing change was a few locations were shaped like mazes. In a way I sorta get what the director tried to do. At the same time, this had virtually nothing to do with Sunderland!!!
Look I know the later maze had paintings on the wall. Which was confirmed to be painted by James. To me that felt like a rather loose connection than something actually important. I know some people going to read this thinking my standards are a bit high. In a way they should be because it's Silent Hill 2!!! You expect the notable gap from the first Silent Hill movie we could've had a master piece.
Oh it's a master of something alright how not to make a proper video game movie? This isn't necessary among the absolute worst video game movies I seen. I will say it's just a little above them though. I really can not recommend this Silent Hill movie. This felt like a massive lie I just struggling to accept. Like Sunderland struggling to accept the truth what happened to his wife.
Return to Silent Hill is a massive disappointment. I can't even think of a scene that's worth talking about in a somewhat positive matter. Every character was horribly portrayed with some being notably off. One of many Pyramid Head appearances that doesn't make sense. A stupid ending that further sank the entire movie to the bottom of a lake!!!
Oh wait the movie actually does that!!! Then the entire movie could've been avoided by either Mary getting on that bus or Sunderland kept on driving. The entire cult thing felt forced than anything else. If this were labeled as an reimagining of Silent Hill 2. Some of these changes I could've excuse. No the director confirmed it's based on that Silent Hill game.
This movie felt like a huge waste of my time!!! The story just never quite came together. Especially when the pacing goes too fast. The ending felt like a huge slap to the face!!! Just to add further salt to everything, a famous Silent Hill song plays late into the movie!!! Good luck for anyone still watching this movie by that point!!!
I mean wow it almost seem like this director wanted to flat out ruin this Silent Hill movie. Does he have something personal against Silent Hill 2? I am curious I really wanna myself. He clearly prefers the original Silent Hill game more. I felt this was a train wreck despite no actual trains in the movie. Return to Silent Hill should've never came out, this isn't how you give proper respect to the franchise!!!
