Pinhead
Let's be honest just look at both of them!!! How often do I say just looking at em is enough reason to be afraid? Truthfully I don't say that often yes I seen a lot of horror movies. Pinhead has this demonic leather appearance with pins in his head. The black eyes screams a truly evil being despite representing order in Hell.
Pinhead always been among the scariest I ever seen!!! He differs from most slasher villains since he uses chains from Hell. It's not often when he alters what's the end of those chains mostly shown in Hellraiser: Bloodline. There's just something about how Doug Bradley delivers lines. Simply putting chills right down your spines!!!
Pinhead had a few weaknesses that weren't easy to use. He's also accompanied by other Cenobites. Now despite coming from Hell to slaughter people then further torturing their souls. They were originally humans confirmed in Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 movie. They are essentially altered entirely by a deity named Leviathan.
Not essentially demons but they do enforce the law especially if you found a way to escape Hell. Let me tell you the Cenobites really don't take kindly to that. Pinhead always been the scariest Cenobite. The closest exception being the Channard Cenobite in the second movie. You knew beings summoned from Hell what's about to come your way was going to be nightmare fuel level stuff.
Pinhead had some truly gory kill scenes. Usually hooking all around a person's body. Then pulling every chain to rip the entire body to pieces. Unlike most of them, Pinhead doesn't mess around. He goes right for the kill unless something unexpected comes up. I been very hyped for the new Hellraiser game. Unfortunately, a couple Hellraiser movies aren't great.
Here's a huge advice avoid Hellraiser: Revelations at all costs!!! You can't go any lower than that Hellraiser movie!!! Even among those Hellraiser movies, Doug Bradley tried to save them. I never once said those Hellraiser movies were bad because of him. In all honestly, I respected the guy who played the character in Hellraiser: Judgment.
I hope we get more decent Hellraiser stories now the author Clive Barker has the franchise back. Well more directly the rights to the Hellraiser movies. Pinhead was simply ahead of his time. The world wasn't ready for a level of such blood & gore. Neither was it ready for one of the most terrifying horror icons in cinema history.
The character always meant so much to me for a long time. I personally want more Hellraiser stuff to enjoy. Even if the classic Pinhead character from those movies isn't involve. I still wanna be freaked out as well as amazed at the insane detail within everything. Hellraiser was among the scariest takes of Hell in cinema history.
Pyramid Head
My original exposure was a close friend introduced me to Silent Hill 2 classic. A long time ago back when I still had an PlayStation 2. He was really praising the hell out of that Silent Hill game. Some of my passion came from a rather unexpected direction. I played through Silent Hill 2 through Silent Hill HD Collection on Xbox 360.
You know the version Konami couldn't fix. I actually was able to get every ending in the game. Among the first major things my friend told me about. He told me about Pyramid Head of course I had this to see the creature. I don't remembered my original impression of the character off hand. I knew this was easily among my favorite Silent Hill monsters.
From all the Silent Hill games I played through. Pyramid Head had such an unexpected appearance. Yes even for a Silent Hill game filled with such freaky designs. Pyramid Head was a huge muscular figure with a large triangular helmet. At times, either he's walks very slow while dragging a huge blade weapon.
Which was called the Great Knife or a spear for very late portions of Silent Hill 2 either versions. Some of the versions the way Pyramid Head moves is so unsettling. The creator of Pyramid Head went in with such an unique concept for a monster. A monster that doesn't have a face but still ends up being absolutely terrifying.
Obviously this is directly referencing the helmet he's wearing. Some versions had songs that suddenly made the creature more unsettling. To be fair, Konami fails to understand what Pyramid Head originally represented. They quickly made the creature Silent Hill's mascot character to make money off of. Which angered his creator by the way because beyond Silent Hill 2 either version.
Pyramid Head was meant to represent pain as well as guilt James had for murdered his wife. Therefore, all the other appearances doesn't make sense at all. I will give Dead by Daylight credit, they found a way to make his appearance properly tie into the game. Pyramid Head looks like he's struggling to move with the Great Knife.
You will quickly realize this thing can easily swing the weapon. His helmet easily among my favorite for any horror franchises. The general shape for the most part stays the same. Personally my favorite design of the helmet was in the original live action Silent Hill movie. Which was copied for the creature in Silent Hill: Homecoming version.
They also made a few similar monsters to Pyramid Head. None of them stood out like Pyramid Head though. James actually called the creature the Red Pyramid Thing. The actual form of the creature was directly based on executioners back in the day for the town. Back then they used to do public executions Sunderland knew about growing up.
Pyramid Head is virtually the Jason of his franchise. Considering both of them now in Dead by Daylight yes I can say that. Both are hulking figures that usually wields a huge bladed weapon. Also known for their brutality to a degree. I doubt Voorhees was any inspiration for the creature. Pyramid Head is so unique design for a horror game creature.
The character never says in canon stuff like Art the Clown. Due to the helmet, you won't know if you're on the creature good or bad side making him even scarier!!! The reminder of his appearance speaks for itself. He sorta looks like a butcher which is fitting in a few ways. I always felt Pyramid Head worked the best among every Silent Hill monster.
Going beyond the appearance as well as his weapons. The deep lore inspiration of his appearance. He instantly stands out from most Silent Hill creatures. He differs in a few key ways making him something truly timeless. You can't really recreate such a horror icon. He was ahead of his time before so many indie horror videos we have today.
Pyramid Head is easily something beyond Silent Hill franchise itself. I don't think the franchise would be as recognizable without the creature. You can tell I'm a huge Pyramid Head fan. You have this tank of a being that can easily rip you apart. Pyramid Head is virtually in either Silent Hill 2 games nightmare fuel done absolutely right!!!
The creature is easily among the most recognized horror villains from Konami in history. I will be honest since Castlevania's Dracula also in Dead by Daylight. I do respect Dracula a little more. Especially for being an awesome alternative version of the character. I strongly felt both of them truly belong in that game!!!
Both are scary in vastly different ways. Dracula is scarier in ways most would understand. Pyramid Head is scarier when you need to look deeper into the creature. Not only that, exactly what this thing is a personal demon to James Sunderland. Yet the creature had good surprising intentions for Sunderland. Sometimes a monster isn't truly one themselves.
People often forget some villain character does some surprising good things for others. This also came with a painful lesson Sunderland learned after Maria killed again. I try to think of this as therapy. Pyramid Head had more humanity than Eddie. Honestly, Pyramid Head was a major factor in horror franchises especially video games that's constantly inspiring more people on a daily basis.
Conclusion
Both these horror icons didn't originally have names. A lot of fans called them Pinhead and Pyramid Head respectively. Eventually, those ended up becoming their names within their franchises. I wouldn't question Hellraiser being some form of inspiration to Silent Hill. I do think both were inspirations among many others for Dead by Daylight.
Two of the most iconic horror villains to date. Also two you really can't recreate today. Also both being incredibly terrifying in vastly different ways. It's difficult to say which horror icon scares me the most or gets under my skin the absolute best. I will confirm that honor would go to Final Destination's Death. But for what it's worth both of them are true horror master pieces.
