Scream VII (2026)
It's no surprise this had a rather rough production. Some key people for one version of the movie left with the main actress fired over comments on social media. She later added more fuel to the fire that convinced people to not watch Scream VII. There also was a legal agreement over the costume that's been resolved. We went from what was originally going to be a more direct sequel to the last two movies.
Suddenly going back to the original heroine Sidney. Which felt like a major step backwards. The torch was passed then this happened isn't a good sign. Sidney was in Scream as in the fifth movie. This is a loose sequel to that Scream movie. It virtually wouldn't mattered if we skip the movie. The movie follows Sidney's family being terrorized by Ghostface.
It was quite risky to bring back Sidney. Despite the last few Scream movies she had small involvements. Sidney always going to be the original heroine that started the franchise. I don't plan to disrespect the character neither the actress in this Scream movie. Honestly, you already putting all your eggs in a basket hoping none of them falls out to break.
I will give some credit that it had some decent kills in the movie. The usage of older characters that isn't Sidney just felt like they're there that's it. They didn't bring much to the movie especially Gale Weathers. Who doesn't even get attacked by the killers. Which also was a disappointment since in Scream VI, she gotten attacked by one of the killers.
The movie plays on AI usage with digital disguises. This was inspired by a lot of fans believed Stu to still be alive. In a scrapped ending of the movie he was going to be alive. Yet the audience reception led to the ending that's in the movie instead. Which isn't much better in all honestly. They directly start things in Sidney's house that's now a museum.
Believe it or not, I previously went to Babe Ruth Birthplace & Museum that's done in a similar style. Except that's sports theme while this was more based on actual murders as well as horror movie stuff. I just felt Ghostface walking outside a burning house was directly ripping off Myers. Who previously done the same thing while killing a couple fire fighters.
Sidney is more of a mother figure in the movie. I'm glad to see Neve Campbell returned to the role. Especially how insulting of a budget she turned down for Scream VI. We don't know the exact amount but fellow actor David Arquette confirmed it wasn't a decent pay. He also expressed disappointment she couldn't be in that Scream movie.
They actually killed one of the killers off earlier than expected. Gale drove in hit & run the guy who was fighting Sidney's husband. Who I'm going to call the new Dewey since he's the sheriff. The first killer to fall we barely knew anything about!!! Yes it was that random of a person in the movie. The most we got to see of this killer was about to pick up coffee from Sidney's coffee shop.
The other two killers are also a mess as well. The tech expert killer was responsible for the AI usage in those calls. Later set up a few monitors while pretending to be deceased killers. They even threw salt at Dewey during this which I didn't like. Dewey was among my favorite characters he didn't deserve this!!!
The main killer was a major disappointment. Usually the main killer in a group is written the best. I actually think this is among the worst of them. The main killer turned out to be Sidney's neighbor Jessica. Who also confessed to killed her family including her husband before the events of the movie. It was revealed their main target was Sidney's daughter Tatum.
In most Scream movies' case, the main target they wanna kill after the reveals. Here, Jessica wanted to steal Tatum to force her into a rather unpleasant life to create a new final girl. Ever since Scream 4, the killers wanted to start everything over. But we all know the truth there's no starting over. Jessica was a crazy, obsess fan of Sidney's from her book.
You know the same book Sidney was going to sign autographs for in Scream 4? They threw in something that really gotten under my skin. Jessica was angry Sidney wasn't involved with the events of Scream VI. Personally this should've been completely left out the movie. All this one line going to do is upset people especially knowing why she wasn't in that Scream movie.
To be more brutally honest, from start to finish the most predictable Scream movie to date. Even with a few moments I didn't fully see coming. I highly doubt the late Wes Craven wanted an Scream movie to be this predictable. I was more impressed by one killer in Scream 3. Scream VII is where the short release gaps notably hurt the movie.
Even considering the roller coaster of it's production. Jenna Ortega for a few reasons left the production. Personally I felt she made the right call. I know some people wanna know do I think this is the worst Scream movie? Actually yeah I do because the killer as in the actual characters was poorly done. In my opinion played too much into obsession.
Two of the killers were obsessed with Stu, one of the original killers. Yes actor Matthew Lillard played the AI disguise for his character. The fact they brought some actors for that one scene leading to the reveal. When you take more time to think about it. This one scene perfectly described how rushed the overall pacing of the movie was!!!
I felt after the beginning kills scene the burning house thing. The movie goes a little too fast as the events plays out. Even a scene where Sidney does this interview Weathers been wanting since the original movie. Obviously using the interview to get Ghostface tracked through call on the air. The bait lead to Sidney getting baited herself.
I should point out Sidney's daughter is named after one of her friends in the original Scream. A fact the movie doesn't shut up about by the way. The movie somehow felt like Scream 4 but everyone done much worst with faster pacing. Even Scream VI done a little better with three killers!!! I'm a bit worried about Scream 8 right now.
Let's go a little further in a rather unexpected direction. Scream: Resurrection done better with two killers!!! Both of them were written better with more actual screen time. I'm sorry using an handful of characters we barely see in the movie isn't a good idea. No we expect the killers to be among the characters we're seeing quite often.
Only Jessica was the most notable among the killers in the movie. What further hurts her character is barely showing her in any of the trailers. You knew something was off with that. A lot of people guessed she was among the killers in the movie. This is how you don't go about hiding one of the killers in a horror movie!!!
Even Scream show the portions on MTV hid who the killers were until the reveal to the casts. Which was a rather genius move unlike this being a bit shady that's horribly done!!! Let's be more honest, the killers felt like a huge let down from the last few Scream movies. I also know the writer that finished the movie wrote a few Scream movies prior.
Which were notably better than Scream VII being his worst to date. He wrote Scream 1, Scream 2 and Scream 4 respectively. I was fine how they went about Sidney in the movie. To me this felt like a great idea that had rather poor execution. Even the usage of AI doppelgangers could've been a little better. Sadly it ended up being a massive disappointment.
Scream VII felt loss among the other entries. Up to this one, all of them connected with each event being essential. This felt more like a spin off story you could forget about. It wouldn't affect much going forward is also a sign of terrible writing!!! I know there's still plenty interesting concepts the franchise could explore.
Scream VII felt like they either ran out of ideas or quickly put something together that's it!!! I wouldn't be surprised it's both myself. Look at Chucky show, all the stuff that's never happened in the movies before!!! I know that's a bit unfair of a comparison to make. But considering they're both quite iconic slasher villains with upcoming movies on the way.
I still felt it was necessary to prove a point. Scream VII is exactly why Craven didn't want Scream to end up like other slasher horror movie franchises. To clarify, a lot of them kept making movies even with stuff doesn't properly line up. The overall quality notably goes down with some of the newer entries.
I hate to say the obvious that's exactly what this Scream movie felt like to me. Scream VII was an insult to the late Wes Craven's legacy. Somehow this became the most successful Scream movie at the box office I'm not kidding. Including everyone tried convincing others to not watch the movie. I can't be the only huge Scream fan heavily disappointed in this movie.
In all honestly, this Scream movie didn't earned that status!!! It felt like a huge rip off from a once great slasher horror movie franchise. I wouldn't even be surprise I end up liking Scary Movie 6 movie that also has Ghostface. Scream VII is a movie that should've been scrapped. It doesn't live up to the legacy at all!!!
Scream VII tried to kept things going following the rough production it had. It was just a poorly repaired vehicle that's about to give out. Honestly, I know they give more time to make Scream 8. I really do because if it's somehow even worst than this. The franchise is effectively dead thanks to this movie!!!
I'm also open to the idea of a full actual reboot with new everything. We gotten that with Scream: Resurrection that isn't connected with Scream show's two seasons. I think right now that's the best angle to continue forward. I don't think there's much more they could do with the legacy characters. At least in the fifth Scream movie, Ghostface killed Dewey was a rather unexpected surprise.
I also got to mention the dad still be alive despite a couple stabs. This was like Sidney's dad that was tied up in the original Scream. All of a sudden you start noticing the lack of creativity. The little things is already stuff done in some form. The very little it actually does that wasn't done prior is horribly done.
Is it wrong to say I have slightly more respect for A Nightmare on Elm Street remake? Scream VII didn't even bother giving us the audience a new set of rules!!! Which I really didn't like because each entry previously given us rules. Each having different horror movie themes that help made em more interesting.
By not doing that you striped away at Scream's identity. The very concept the slasher horror movie franchise was built upon. I was just as mixed over I Know What You Did Last Summer. newer movie killers twist. I never been a fan of that franchise myself kinda meh to me. It's even worst because Scream always been among my absolute favorites.
Scream VII is a movie that will only disappoint. How much depends how much you truly love the franchise? End of the day, this felt like someone tried to quickly finish their home work. But every bad things happened to the point. The teacher couldn't even bother to look at the ruined home work assigned to the student.
If that doesn't speak volumes how terrible this Scream movie was? I don't know what more I could do otherwise? I prefer when Scream 3 was the worst because at least there's a few moments I could rewatch. This felt more like how you don't properly continue a slasher franchise. Honestly, I can't recommend watching this Scream movie it's not worth your time at all!!!
