I want to be crystal clear I'm not supporting the author of Rurouni Kenshin. I'm actually supporting two of my favorite Shonen protagonists ever!!!
Verdict
Gabimaru
Usually I would directly say something towards a particular fan base to hear me out first. Before getting out weapons as well as torches. Due to the disgusting crimes of Nobuhiro Watsuki, the author of Rurouni Kenshin. I would understand you don't want to support his works. To be fair, I still respect Rurouni Kenshin story a lot despite things.
This isn't going to be as clear cut as many fight predictions I done in the past. Both used to be the greatest assassin with a notable body count. Kenshin is a little over an decade older. There's a few major factors I gotta discuss for this. Rurouni Kenshin had more notable time passed than Hell's Paradise. I will try to explain most of Hell's Paradise manga series took place a week.
Obviously, Rurouni Kenshin like most Shonen series that has more actual locations. More notable time passed during the story that also plays into Kenshin having more overall experience. This also means Kenshin had more notable breaks between arcs than Gabimaru. Who had to work with others to survive a rather unusual island.
Gabimaru also became part plant that boosted his abilities as well as gaining regeneration. He did need help with Sagiri to survive beheaded temporary. A major difference is Kenshin only been taught swords while Gabimaru could work with anything. Even his hands can easily kill people with ease. Both can quickly adapt to training as well as combat at a faster rate.
I should point out Kenshin's sword as stated many times in his series. Designed to not kill people will work against him here. Sure he has defeated some impressive opponents. He survived Shishio Makoto long enough for him to die from his burnt condition. Which brings me to another point he also used explosive moves.
Gabimaru himself is famous for using fire techniques. We do know that's quite effective against Kenshin. Not to mention, majority of Gabimaru's opponents were more superhuman. Hell's Paradise got some bizarre creatures including the Tensen that's essentially humanoid plant people. Who lived centuries beating out the most experienced Kenshin ever defeated!!!
Hell's Paradise also has a more unique system involving Tao. Which surprisingly does include sex among the styles of the Tensen. But it also plays into five elements sorta like Pokemon. One element type can either hinder or enhance another element type. If it's hinder, you won't be capable of killing em.
Even if your opponent with the superior element type low on energy. If it's enhanced either work with another compatible element type or have increased attack efficiency. Both ways does notable damage to the correct opposing element type opponents. This is rather critical since Rurouni Kenshin more realistic about everything.
I know some could point a few select stuff out. Rurouni Kenshin isn't the usual Shonen Jump ridiculousness. In a similar way, Hell's Paradise is slightly closer to that expectation. Neither actually around the typical Shonen Jump scaling you would expect from them. I still can confirm Hell's Paradise is higher scaling than Rurouni Kenshin though.
Gabimaru more used to facing enemies with regeneration. The more broken type of regeneration that took a lot of effort from small group of people to finish off. None of the Tensen gotten defeated one on one within the series. Even reducing portions of that to just Gabimaru. He's already out doing late manga Kenshin.
Speed is among the closest stats, how often do I say that? Anyway I must give a slight edge to Gabimaru. As many people knows shinobis are quite fast on their feet. It's more directly connected to their job. Even excluding Gabimaru's former life, he still out moves Kenshin in combat. He also possibly going to out wit Kenshin faster than in vice versa.
Which is one of Kenshin's greatest advantages in his series. It also doesn't help Gabimaru more willing to use such tactics Kenshin refuses to use. Gabimaru along with regeneration also easily wins durability. He even could survive quick assassination moves with ease. He faced Aza Chobei where he quickly broke his neck.
Chobei previously became part plant to quickly bounce back from that. This means Kenshin can't even effectively slow down Gabimaru. Either he's going to avoid or take getting stab to get in close. Then use one of his fire techniques. I also believe Gabimaru is a little smarter. Don't get me wrong both are clever strategists.
Gabimaru being the best of his clan at such a young age speaks volumes. It's true skill played a major role in their past assassin lifes. I also could argue ninjas uses wits about many situations on the fly. Gabimaru already proven to be the more determine out of the two warriors. He also proven to have greater endurance than Kenshin.
Just trying to keep up with an Tensen takes up a lot of stamina. We're talking about some of Kenshin's greatest fights against just one Tensen fight Gabimaru had. He actually came close of defeating an member on his own. I really need to point out, this was even before he learned Tao. Which made this rather impressive even though he loss that fight.
They were lucky to even breath during a fight with them. Gabimaru can easily break Kenshin's sword. Yes Kenshin does know sword breaking techniques. Kenshin is also unable to repair his sword on his own putting him at a huge disadvantage. Gabimaru also tanked much greater levels of force especially against the Tensen.
A small fraction of that damage would've easily defeated Kenshin. Gabimaru's regeneration plays a critical role in this fight. He could easily out last Kenshin in a driven out fight. Another huge factor is Kenshin doesn't like fighting similar to his past life. Even when he knows he needs to in order to win. Gabimaru won't have a problem with that.
Gabimaru defeated a lot of members of his clan including who would've been his successor. Yeah both of them defeated their successor in a fight to the death. Gabimaru using Tao also works like many similar systems within Shonen Jump. If he were blinded thanks another prisoner with a death sentence, Tamiya Gantetsusai.
The samurai had blood covering one of his eyes. He gets a rather extreme idea to use his hooked hand to remove his other eye ball. This allowed him to sense an member of the Tensen he was facing perfectly. Gabimaru could more easily sense Kenshin's movements to counter. There's a chance Kenshin might register being the wood type.
Which is compatible with Gabimaru's fire type. But since Kenshin isn't a Tao user that won't matter. Ultimately despite both being based around a similar era in Japan. Their worlds are vastly different with Gabimaru being away from home in most of the story. Kenshin had a few notable places to sleep. I still felt this was rather a clear cut with Gabimaru winning.
To be fair, they are strikingly similar characters. I could see them teaming up now I would pay for that!!! It ultimately comes down to two simple things. Rurouni Kenshin is way more realistic that notably affect scaling. Also this fight depends if it's early or late manga Gabimaru. The late manga version could've agreed to stop fighting.
The early manga version would likely killed him. This is because Gabimaru even with all the stuff going on. Ended up becoming surprisingly human by the final battle. Also Gabimaru didn't know Tao until he loss to an member of the Tensen. Which would've been a closer version of the fight. Late manga Gabimaru easily wins though.
Winner: Gabimaru (Hell's Paradise)
I would only recommend Rurouni Kenshin for it's story. But of course I highly recommend Hell's Paradise as well.
