Sigil II (2023)
Just like Sigil 1, John Romero personally made a set of levels for the original Doom. In this particular case it was his way of tying into Doom's 30th anniversary. This would be spiritually Episode 6 for the original Doom. Also like Sigil 1, Doom 2 stuff not presented. I'm talking enemies, weapons and power ups from that game.
Although you can use cheats like all weapons to use the super shotgun. I had a difficult time liking Sigil 1. Mostly due to how strict everything was. It was very secretive to the point I constantly had to look up videos to get a little further. I didn't do that as close as much in Sigil II. These are some crazy huge maps with a lot of enemies.
The maps is notably better than Sigil 1. The boss fight at the end is truly intense. I won't give much away since I played through this on Hurt Me Plenty. I will confirm you may struggle more than you realize. Also like Sigil 1, the episode set up very similar to the original Doom. Eight main maps with one secret map you could find if you know how to.
You can tell Romero spent hours making sure everything works just right. I been to a few of his streams while he's working on this Doom mod. This is also very ambush theme meaning don't rush often. If you save often you may wanna wait a little before doing so. You might accidentally save to end up in between a lot of enemies.
Also like Sigil 1, you got to shoot switches that appears as an demonic eye. Clearly Romero liked Sauron to a degree. These also among the most complex maps within the main campaigns. It's difficult to explain properly until you experience it yourself. You really gotta pay extra attention to the environment.
Not only that, you also get some great music as well. I also would recommend if you're playing without codes to play easier difficulties than Hurt Me Plenty. Higher than that guarantees running into Cyberdemons. This also has the shortest end game message by far. It doesn't even half the screen like most of them filling it up with texts.
You will witness some creative within the map designs. Considering this was designed by an original Doom team member. You can expect it lives up to his reputation here. Sigil II is a great follow up to his previous spiritual Doom episode mod. I may heard he's working on another Doom mod called Hellion. There's no word what the status of this Doom II mod is right now.
When that comes out will be for Doom II. It doesn't matter since the first two Doom games works with every Doom mod in existence. Very true with the newest version. Sigil II was somewhat unexpected what it brings to the table in a good way. This may not be the best campaign within Doom + Doom II. It's better than a lot of Doom mods out of respect.
I will say I'll recommend it if you want an challenge. It's technically more fair than The Plutonia Experiment. This is better than Extreme Rise of the Triad. It's notably better balance with better designed levels. Considering a few members of that team made the difficult expansion. I can compare the two to a degree.
It's not often you wanna move fast. It's mostly moving slow with caution while being ready to shoot anything. Right up to the end it's that level of intensity. If some enemy placements doesn't take you out. Possibly getting lost within levels suddenly desperate what to do likely will lol. My other recommending through modding is get Brutal Doom with that WAD file.
To me anything Doom with Brutal Doom is like the greatest FPS experience ever!!! I could respect people not wanting to do that. Sigil II will throw some huge curve balls at ya. Don't worry there's plenty of demons to take out. Some of the later maps has over an hundred enemies. Just don't expect Legacy of Rust level of madness here.
Sigil II does sorta feel like an continuation of the original Doom before Doom II in a way. Some could argue Legacy of Rust in the actual Doom canon taken both Sigil mods' place. You also can expect some backtracking to a degree. Otherwise if you're willing to play it. You may enjoy this anniversary Doom mod that's amazing in what it does pull off.
