Death Battle Fight Prediction: Popeye (Popeye's Revenge) vs Popeye (Popeye the Slayer Man) vs Popeye (Shiver Me Timbers)
Shiver Me Timbers (2025)
Hello everyone I'm XboxClown89, today marks the completion of the original horror Popeye trilogy. I know today is April Fools Day but this isn't a joke. Plus it turns out I got something else to discuss while in this review blog as well. Regardless, let's see how this horror Popeye movie stacks to the other two. In all honestly no one expected this to happen but I'm glad it did.
Shiver Me Timbers (2025)
Previously I talked about the trailer or what I thought was the trailer. It was more of a teaser with the full trailer a few weeks later. I seen the actual trailer plenty of times. We get some decent shots of Popeye even before he becomes a monster. The trailer makes it obvious this is a parody horror movie. It isn't meant to be taken seriously.
We don't see much of the kills. What we do see is some of the gore featured in the horror Popeye movie. The title actually has a history connection to the character. Dating all the way back to 1934 a cartoon short with that title came out. I actually recall seeing this particular one years ago. Popeye takes on ghosts among an ghost ship.
Personally I thought that was a cool idea to tie the title of the movie. To that particular Popeye cartoon short with an ! originally in the title. Obviously the plot of the movie vastly different with Popeye being the monster. Speaking of Popeye, this looked the least like the character. He doesn't even have the outfit you expect him to wear. The signature arms aren't presented either.
Somehow this version of people nailed the face insanely well. Some could argue a little better than Popeye in Popeye the Slayer Man. The trailer makes it obvious our final girl going to be Olive Oyl. Simply going by these horror Popeye movies. She went from being his sister to missing wife to just some teenager. All of a sudden Olive treated more differently than Popeye funny enough.
It's sorta like when The Mean One trailer. The original trailer where the narrator points out who this little girl suppose to be within that Christmas story. Almost coming off as a joke or more directly an insult about it. Keep in mind, all of this is just from the full trailer. We still got the actual movie to review here. Setting wise it's similar to Popeye's Revenge mirroring Friday the 13th series.
The trailer also points out Olive's brother Castor in the movie. Popeye the Slayer Man sneaked in Sweet Pea as well as J. Wellington Wimpy cameo. I do like they are taking some of the other Popeye characters. Bluto in particular still within the copy rights for a few years I checked. Of course they had to steal a line from Army of Darkness to start an sex scene again in the same trailer.
Out of the three horror Popeye movies I was the most unsure what to expect with this. Simply going by the trailer you got some possible ideas what it could or couldn't be the actual movie. All of a sudden the movie coming out on April 1st making sense. Parody movies in recent years haven't been great. Shows parodying stuff ended up being way better in comparison.
Also I wanna stop for a moment. Last November all three of these horror Popeye movies gotten announced. It's mind blowing all of them came out close by each other with no delays. I guess Mickey was a little too quick on doing that lol. I'm excited three horror movies introducing Popeye to the horror genre.
I still haven't mention the closest part. All of these movies came forty five years after the live action Popeye movie. You know the famous Robin Williams Popeye movie that's mixed with people. Either you love the movie or you don't care for it. There's no in middle on this matter. All of these Popeye movies are done in live action is crazy to me.
Again I still not got to reviewing the movie yet. I can't help all of this came out of no where. Then again this is Popeye we're talking about after all. Any horror Popeye movie after these three just isn't going to mean the same. Sure some might not suck give or take. Eventually we may go through this again with another character that's gotten into the public domain in the near future.
I guess the world really can't get enough of Popeye!!! What an idea to turn such an iconic hero into a monster. Let alone three different takes of a similar concept. I still felt parts of this feels like The Blob to me. It's almost like Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV minus the good side aspect. The same movie had an alternative evil universe counterpart of Toxie named The Noxious Offender.
If you wanna be technical about this. Shiver Me Timbers is going to be somewhat similar to that Toxic Avenger movie. The full trailer made the movie seem like a huge acid trip lol. I also could compare this to the original Scary Movie. Which had a few killers parodying a couple horror movies. Although this might actually be more like Scary Movie 2 lol.
I also gotta mention everyone seems to be going well for Olive. Then all of a sudden how a particular comet made that very night an absolute nightmare. You can tell the people making this wanna go nuts with ideas. I wouldn't be surprise this version of Popeye barely like the actual character at all. Alright fine I'll just go review the damn movie happy?
The real review
I'll try to not spoil much of the movie.
Shiver Me Timbers (2025)
The intro is clearly inspired by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series. Some weird cheap CGI special effects including the killer version of Popeye. Although it kinda works in that regard almost cartoon coming to life. Each kill kept getting more mess up as the movie went on. Sadly if you're really in it for the kills.
You got to wait almost half an hour for the first actual kill. I would say up to a point it's a little too slow of a pacing. Then suddenly it starts going a little too fast for remainder of the movie. Most of the characters are quite generic. My two favorite characters is Popeye and Lt. Lang respectively. Surprisingly Popeye says some of his famous lines.
Some could argue he sounds better than Popeye in Popeye the Slayer Man. What I wasn't expecting some truly mess up kills. We get some heads destroyed with a few of those ripped clean off. He even pulled a page from Duke Nukem funny enough. In Duke Nukem 3D, Duke rips Overlord's head off. Then takes a dump on where his head used to be.
Yeah this version of Popeye does that. Some horror references were expected. But ultimately came off being a little cheesy in a way that doesn't necessary work with the movie. For a comedy horror movie I didn't think the comedy portion of it that funny. Even aspects of the horror side is rather inconsistent. They obviously used CGI for most of the kill scenes.
We even had someone just standing suddenly dies from a piece of Halley's comet going through their head. I'll give that some credit I didn't expect the actual comet to kill anyone. Also it's not as stupid as a particular accidental death in Popeye the Slayer Man. This felt a lot like Friday the 13th series as expected.
Again I gotta give credit to Popeye the Slayer Man using a setting better suited for the character. Popeye easily destroys people in this movie. He struggles for a little bit to come right back killing em. Except Olive Oyl who gets quite creative to defend herself. This even determine things for my upcoming Death Battle prediction blog.
I will say I do prefer this version of Popeye over Popeye's Revenge version. He also talks the most out of the three horror Popeye characters. I actually could see my brother loving this version of the character a lot. Popeye steals the show for most of the movie. Lt. Lang I instantly liked when we finally get to him.
He was a military veteran that's in a wheel chair. The actor played the character amazingly well. Don't expect top notch acting in horror movies like this. Just lower your expectations a little bit. You won't ever get disappointed probably the best advice you're going to get. This guy gets surprise attack by Popeye.
Keep in mind, he had an shotgun right there in his wheel chair. I'll come right out to say this it also was the most predictable of the three horror Popeye movies. Other than some truly mess up moments. I quickly knew as those moments about to happen someone dying. Popeye was simply smoking while finishing.
When barely anything from the comet landed in his pipe. Yes somehow this caused his transformation. Before that, he was a kind old man that almost gotten hit by a car. I would've been a little upset by that. You kinda wish more stuff to differ parts of the story more. I don't wanna say the movie was boring it's not.
Pacing plays a major role if you like or dislike something. Waiting so long for a first kill you kinda want the rest of the movie to make up for that. Of course there's the final battle that's reminding me heavily of Evil Dead series. Some of that franchise's most famous quotes gets reused too. Parts of the ending implies a sequel could happen.
I recently seen an interview with the main actress and director of the film. The director stated he already has plans to make a sequel. Now two of these horror Popeye movies are possibly working on becoming an franchise. I also can confirm this was much better edited than Popeye's Revenge. I felt just taking killer Popeye scenes than made em into a long video is better than the actual movie.
Which that wouldn't work for Popeye's Revenge. I could see that working with Popeye the Slayer Man though. Shiver Me Timbers isn't the worst of the three in my opinion. I would say I like parts of the movie but that's it. I don't necessary dislike the movie either. It just felt like a lot of huge changes would go a long way here.
Then again all three of them had rushed production periods. I guess the world desperately needed horror Popeyes. I could see people on drugs maybe enjoying this to a degree. I will confirm I do prefer this version of Olive Oyl over Popeye's Revenge version. Ultimately the missing wife version in Popeye the Slayer Man still my favorite.
This felt like let's put some stuff together then called it a day. The entire movie felt like such random ideas for a movie. It's almost a joke yes we know what today is. Even coming out today, I don't think it'll fair well especially against Popeye the Slayer Man. Honestly, it's difficult for me to recommend the movie.
I know I'm being a bit harsh towards the horror Popeye movie. For what it's worth I did find some enjoyment in it. Even if waiting roughly half the movie being a huge issue for some people. I easily could see my dad falling asleep trying to watch this. To me, it just didn't feel worth that. I do wanna confirm this is a real review with my true thoughts on the movie.
