Killing Time: Resurrected review

Hello everyone I'm XboxClown89, back in June I reviewed the PC version of Killing Time. As of last night I won Steam version of Killing Time: Resurrected. This giveaway kinda came out of no where. Miss Slaughter who streams not only under her own Twitch account. At times she also streams for Nightdive Studios' Twitch account as well.

I personally wanna thank her and Nightdive for this amazing remastered game. Originally I didn't think I'll have much to add. Well not quite I actually got a lot to talk about. I will be linking my review of the old PC version down below. I will say easily among my favorite remasters they done by far. I am still mind blown how damn great it truly was.

My review of the original PC version

Killing Time: Resurrected (2024)

I will try not to repeat anything I said in my previous review of the game. Yes this is an enhanced version in every possible way. Just comparing a few original versions to their remasters I played. This had the most surprising impact on me. Yes they added features to spice things up. This was virtually combining the 3DO version into the PC version.

They used the entire map of the PC version. Which now includes Bathhouse of Osiris that originally got cut from the game. This area took me a little while to find. They also added a ship wreck right at the beginning. Several locations are notably changed for the better. Like originally you had to jump across both ways regarding the light house.

Now there's no gaps within the path leading up to the light house. Most of these changes really help made the locations stands out more. You get an knife pulled from the 3DO version among your weapons. Two enemies also pulled from the 3DO version. Ducks are among the weakest, easiest enemies. You gotta not pay attention to get hurt by em.

You also could step on em as well. Sometimes when you're low on health doing that gives you blue orbs heals you. However doing that at the wrong time gives you an unavoidable red orbs that hurts you. Let's be honest they don't pose much of a threat you can just ignore em. Just get use to a lot of whacking. Of course, bats are actually the worst enemy.

They are too minor with a handful found in the game. You can quickly kill em off or if you're luck run pass em. The weird thing is when they die. For some weird reason they sound like monkeys. You knew I had to talk about the 3DO enemies with the newer versions of the PC enemies. I'll start with the PC enemies first since they're in the game by default.

You can tell they used stop motion for them. Personally some of my absolute favorite things ever used stop motion to a degree. A couple Christmas specials, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Celebrity Deathmatch and Robot Chicken respectively. I seen a lot of games that used stop motion on either bosses or regular enemies.

I respect they done this than just redoing them in 3D animation. I don't think it would have the impact this had. Even enemies like Ghosts looks menacing. One of the very enemies that doesn't look different are Skeletons. Yes we gotta talk about them, they do have a smoking animation. I don't know if it's location exclusive animation or not though.

3DO enemies looks absolutely mind blowing in this. Almost as if they're actually in the game. Well from technology stand point they are I guess the joke's on me lol. What I meant is they look so realistic. The ones actual people portrayed for the game. I actually do prefer the 3DO versions over PC ones. Especially clowns, come on you knew this was coming.

They are vastly different from their PC counterparts. They are much creepier just watching them moving around. You quickly become uneasy around their presence. Not only that, they grab you animation amazing stuff. Almost reaching outside the screen to grab you effect. Maids also do this with punching you as well.

My favorite enemy remains to be Chefs. I really prefer the 3DO version more. Just compare the two versions, you instantly more terrified of the 3DO version. Also you get this 3D style meat cleaver animation. Considering to see that you gotta get hit by their blades. The death animations are among my favorite things in this version.

Each enemy has a rememberable death animation. The weirdest is clowns with a red balloon that pops after they die. This is as close you can get to Pennywise in a video game. Some enemies gets decapitated among death like dogs or chefs. The fact a lot of areas has enemies from both versions. Somehow this concept worked incredibly well.

The map screen is way better than it originally was. You also have additional sections to help figure where you are or finding where to go to next. Lighting is notably way better especially in darker areas. I can see much more clearer in comparison. You get more ammo as well as several power ups. Yes this kinda made it feel more like an Doom game with those.

Personally I didn't even care it helped a lot. You also can keep track of your key items. Thank you for putting RSVP among keys section. You need that to be allowed inside the Conway Estate You also get to explore the right side of the island too. Which is already mind blowing compared to the keys also does that on a smaller scale.

The music is notably better quality with amazing sound effects. You get a vault packed with some awesome behind the scenes stuff. They even gave you the entire script filled of ghost conversations. Which is the longest thing you can view in there. Thanks to a stream I went to that had someone that worked on this remaster.

I actually got something a little surprising to share. According to this developer, there's a disc they weren't able to recover. The last of stuff seem to be gone to time. Let's be honest, it wasn't mind blowing or something critical that needed to be in this remastered version. We got already plenty to make it the true definitive version with that disc.

The controls I played this with a controller. Now that's already better than the PC version. Doing everything control wise is mind blowing better in every aspect imaginable. No more pressing two particular buttons on your keyboard to aim up or down. Well a few areas you had to in the PC version. You simply aim that's a great change.

Overall moving around with automatic running by default I love it!!! The controls to me just felt right I didn't have a simple issue with em. Swapping out weapons is even easier. You also get an option if you run out on a particular gun. If you wanna swap out depending on the options or don't at all. This is helpful depending on your play style.

The textures looks insanely great too. The picture from two trailers is in the game. I just wish the other picture from the announcement trailer also included. I also wish the final launch trailer wasn't the same for the most part to the previous trailer. I know rather minor that isn't even about the game itself. Ghosts that you see their conversations are done perfectly.

It's virtually mind blowing they all look absolutely amazing. I also gotta talk about the final boss, mostly with her new in game appearance. I really prefer this over the PC version. This actually represented Tess way better. When I first saw this model I was caught off guard how great it looks. This remaster felt like the version the right people waited a long time for.

Technically speaking story wise, time stopped in the 1930s. The events of the game was in the 1990s being around sixty years. We gotten this remaster a few years prior to either version turning thirty years old. I guess time is kinda crazy sometimes. More 90s games are coming back in style. I would have to say the most mind blowing remaster from them I ever played!!!

My standards were high after realizing I liked the PC version more than I thought. Then I played this, it's no comparison you gotta play this!!! Just imagine the newer versions of Doom games. The newer versions more recently been somewhat better in some ways. But this is like damn let's fully make everything pop with excitement.

It's almost like I'll show you Killing Time on PC. Not bad but get a load of this!!! As a 90s kid, this remaster brought back the more unusual 90s funky style. They made this game into a master piece in every sense of the word. This goes up then so beyond you can't possibly top this greatness!!! Killing Time: Resurrected is a fantastic remaster that everyone needs to play at least once in life.
