Nintendo 64 vs. PlayStation Face Off #6 Mace the Dark Age vs. Soul Edge

Hi everyone I'm Jack Red, we're here to compare to ports to weapon based fighting arcade games. On PlayStation we have Soul Edge aka Soul Blade. Which people seem to forget that came before Soulcalibur 1. On Nintendo 64 we have Mace the Dark Age. I did ask around before doing this for the closest N64 game of being Soul Edge on the console. They all agreed with Mace being that game.

Believe it or not, I grew up with both games. Soul Edge is what you expect of most Soulcalibur games today. You get a lot of characters with more weapons, levels, costumes and another big mode to play. More game modes including multiplayer ones to keep you coming back. This gives you so much & still holds up very well.

Mace the Dark Age has some similarities to Bandai Namco's Soulcalibur series. Similar roster of characters with interesting ways of unlocking characters. Which none of these methods ever get used in Soul series. Over time or with a code you can unlock two hidden characters. The rest of them requires particular conditions making them tough to get.

All of those characters are joke ones I'm not kidding. You can play as a janitor named Ned. A chicken that briefly appears in another character's finisher. The training dummy, hey Tekken someone ripped off Mokujin lol. Officially by a few months of 1997 I just checked to be sure. Both games has joke related stuff. In Soul Edge's case, almost every character has one joke weapon.

It is a lot easier to unlock the hidden characters in Soul Edge. The controls are perfect compared to having trouble getting use to Mace the Dark Age. Video cut scenes are a huge step up with all that texts. Let's be honest most areas Mace the Dark Age falls. Soul Edge greatly improved upon making the PlayStation port technically better than the original arcade version.

Any port better than the original version has my respect. I will say for Mace the Dark Age it is a cool fighting game. You give it a chance before throwing it into hell fires.

Winner: Soul Edge on PlayStation
