Hi everyone I'm Jack Red, today we're aiming high among both consoles' wrestling games. Two of the absolute best WWF now WWE games ever made goes into an championship match. In your left corner is No Mercy on Nintendo 64 often considered by many to be the greatest wrestling game. In the right corner is Smackdown! 2: Know Your Role possibly the greatest Smackdown! game ever made.
No Mercy is a follow up to Wrestlemania 2000. Yes another classic on the same console I very recently talked about. This greatly improves over everything the previous game. I personally consider this one of the absolute greatest sports licensed games I ever played. No Mercy is a truly unique experience most newer WWE are still attempting to recreate & fail.
Smackdown! 2: Know Your Role does improve in some areas while flawed in others. This game is still one of the finest wrestling games on the console. You could do a few matches you can't do in many wrestling games. For the time if you didn't own an Nintendo 64 aka the definite console for wrestling games. This is one of those games that helps with you waiting for that kind of experience.
A lot of the same wrestlers are present in both games. Both has matches not featured in the other wrestling game. Although they do allow you to create your own wrestlers. Which for Smackdown! 2 is one of those improvements over the original. I remember everyone in my old neighbor hood couldn't stop talking about No Mercy.
The way they went about is heavily inspired constantly being recreated in most newer WWE games. It gives you plenty of options to work with. In fact as soon as you start making a character. Chances are you will keep making them for a while. It is rare for such a feature to be the talk of the neighbor hood.
It blows Smackdown! 2's create a wrestler away in so many ways. Audio wise I would say despite liking some songs in Smackdown! 2. Majority of songs in No Mercy are still among my favorite today. Sound effects easily goes to No Mercy since even the best sound effects in Smackdown! 2 aren't that great.
Both games allows wrestlers to leave the arena to fight in the backstage area. For Smackdown! 2 this is only possible in Anywhere Fall match. You can do it regardless of which match you're playing in No Mercy. You also get a bigger roster of wrestlers in No Mercy. Unlike last time, both wrestling games has all wrestlers theme songs.
Both does have a few lengthy campaigns making you feel like you're actually wrestling there. However you can skip matches in Smackdown! 2. Despite waiting for an unexplained reason seven seconds to do so. But why would you skip your chance of wrestling? I can understand speeding all the other matches for you to play.
This feature was simply not necessary to have. Controls wise this is an easy win for No Mercy. You can get confuse with Smackdown! 2's controls. I never had that problem for long on No Mercy. Also I don't have to worry about the referee the entire time. Just like Wrestlemania 2000, the referee is sorta there & not there at the same time.
He will count down if one or all wrestlers are out of the ring to ten or pinning your opponent. If it isn't obvious why I'm bringing this up. You could say the referee could get in the way of the fighting. Just like many wrestling games, it is possible to knock them unconscious. Of course this means as long they're down you can't win your match.
At the same time this does allow you to cheat. However there is a easy way around this in No Mercy. Remember me talking about changing the rules from one of my recent entries. This includes not being disqualify and no rope breaks. In other words you can sorta alter matches to be another one adding a customizing factor to it.
This by itself makes it really stand out from Smackdown! series on PlayStation. No Mercy also has more hidden characters. There's more weapons you can use with most actually pulled from the audience. Let's be honest there's more depth to the overall experience in every possible way. It doesn't help you can tell parts of Smackdown! 2 was rushed.
Thank god not like Blood 2 or some ports of classic games. Yet they easily could've took more time to improve some of the big problems. I really should mention the load times in Smackdown! 2 does ruin the experience. Sometimes you could be waiting fifteen minutes or longer just for a match. I never had that problem in No Mercy.
Winner: No Mercy on Nintendo 64
