This was another forgotten era of The Simpsons caused. Within a decade the world finally understood what The Simpsons done to become an successful cartoon show. Inevitably I had to talk about this. Six rememberable cartoon shows that people still talks about today. Well most of them I don't know if anyone still talks about The Critic honestly.
Simply due to their successes many more cartoon shows came. All of those shows has The Simpsons to thank. I also liked all of these particular cartoon shows are mostly vastly different from The Simpsons. A lot of us can agree Family Guy has strong similarities to The Simpsons. I personally wanted to talk about each of these cartoon shows.
I figured the best order to do this in. Simply start with the first one to aired on television. I'll keep going until I reached the final show on the list. I highly doubt most people that reads this knows the order off hand that well. It kinda helps to make it harder to predict which cartoon show I'll discuss next. Anyway I can't wait to dive straight into this!!!
Beavis and Butt-Head
This is a rather interesting cartoon show to talk about. You have two rebellious, stupid teenagers. They get into all kind of situations. They also do these music video rants that's usually entertaining. This has the shortest stories as well as the shortest overall episode length. Originally an MTV show now airing through Paramount+.
It's one of those famous cartoon shows that's gotten canceled a few times. Officially in it's third run going onto Comedy Central channel. You know the same channel as South Park that'll be interesting. In a way you could relate to these characters. Don't expect much intelligence from this. This is heavily playing off stupidity of teens.
This show was successful enough to get a few movies as well as a couple video games. Yes there's stories that takes place in high school. At times, they also do stories at home or many locations. Not to mention their fast food job I wouldn't buy anything from those two. Of course they also play off horny teens to a degree.
Let's be honest MTV usually didn't air stuff like this on their channels. I still enjoyed their match in Celebrity Deathmatch. Somehow this duo kept coming back when you don't expect it. I remembered used to looking forward to watch more of this show growing up. I also had the Sega Genesis game which can be brutal at times.
Our journey starts from 1993 to 1999. Just the debut years of each cartoon shows I'm going to discuss. Obviously if I taken extra time to add in more runs. Some of the readers could've gotten confused from that. I figured this was the best, simple way of doing things. I hope you enjoy this unique perceptive of that Simpsons era.
The Critic
I partly remembered this cartoon show. It did only last one season. The high light I felt was the crossover episode with The Simpsons. The main actor has a notable connection to The Simpsons. It's a parody of shows that used to review movies. Which was a rather creative idea for a show. If you think about it some of those are making fun of bad movies.
Just imagine something like this further makes front of all that. It's a show if you seen parts of it. Somehow it just sticks with you. It might not be the greatest thing ever. What it does do well already blew those three failed cartoon shows away. You get witty humor with some of the jokes going over your head.
I felt it should be watched to a degree. You don't have to do every episode. Which wouldn't take long anyway. There's also webisodes in early 2000s. I guess that technically would count as a second run. The Critic is quite true to it's name. It's hard to say why the short original run. Either it was put on the wrong channel or maybe the concept too ahead of it's time.
In a weird way some similar shows you wouldn't expect. Possibly follow a similar concept in some way. A huge example being The Nostalgia Critic. I confessed he really decline in recent years. The Angry Video Game Nerd that's more towards video games could've been somewhat inspired as well. It is possible inspired or that The Critic possibly led to a similar concept becoming successful later on.
King of the Hill
Right out the gate I know there's a famous misconception about who started two or more successful cartoon shows. Either you heard Matt Groening or Seth MacFarlane. The truth is before both of them done that. There was Mike Judge with King of the Hill. It's hard to say which made him truly famous this or Beavis and Butt-Head.
King of the Hill was essentially the perfect recreation of an live action sitcom show. Although it's much more serious than most similar style shows. There are occasionally some rememberable funny moments. At times there are lessons the show teaching people. At one point used to be the second longest running animated sitcom show.
I also gotta mention the upcoming reboot show. This show was surprisingly creative in a unique way. Even when things gotten out of control. It never gotten truly ridiculous like many similar shows. There's a great balance to everything with a surprising level of relating to. I do see some people quickly finding this show boring.
Let me tell you stick around long enough. You understand how Adult Swim gotten allowed to aired episodes Fox didn't. This was a huge deal for a show that was canceled. Deep down this show meant a lot to people. I personally felt it's worth checking out. Not for the humor but rather a unique perceptive of real life that's entertaining.
South Park
Believe it or not, the only show on this list still in it's original run. South Park is currently the second longest running animated sitcom behind The Simpsons. Of course, it had a movie as well as a couple South Park games. Don't worry the creators making sure future South Park games don't suck. They actually made stuff out of cardboard boxes for this show.
It heavily plays off of people's overactions as well as judging others too quickly. South Park in particular started the famous going over the top mature adult sitcom trend. I won't sugar coat it this show is quite disgusting. It's difficult to describe it's somewhat bizarre humor. It's strangely between funny or flat out mess up.
South Park does focus on a lot of characters. Back when I was watching the show. It heavily focused on four kids that goes through some rather strange situations. Let's be honest, South Park isn't a show you go in thinking. No it's a show you go in hoping to laugh your butts off. It's amazing this show still airing episodes.
Sure it's notably reduced amount of episodes in recent years. Largely due to a rather unique streaming situation they're in. But also the creators wanted to keep their show more consistent. They even do such out there concepts that somehow works for the show. It's a surprisingly creative cartoon show that deserves some respect.
Family Guy
I knew eventually I had to talk about Family Guy. Possibly The Simpsons' biggest rival as well as the famous both ripping each other off thing. Family Guy is over the top offensive adult sitcom show. A weird true fact is DVD sells led to the show getting back on television twice. It's very obvious The Simpsons was a major inspiration to this show.
It's essentially Macfarlane's variation of The Simpsons. Personally I'm more into American Dad! myself. I wasn't crazy for The Cleveland Show myself. Family Guy heavily plays off these cut away gags. There's some truly disgusting moments as well. Obviously this show isn't for everyone. Family Guy is basically the dark side of The Simpsons in a nut shell.
The earlier seasons are notably harder to predict. Not to mention much funnier than the newer seasons. There's a lot of singing as well. Like The Simpsons, some of the voice actors voiced a lot of characters. Parts of the concept came from two particular cartoon shorts Macfarlane made before Family Guy. There was a time Family Guy was witty about it's humor.
Even I notice the family went from people you could've related to. In newer seasons becoming truly horrible people. Some of my favorite cartoon characters ever are from this show. Obviously this was a huge inspiration to me. I simply felt hopefully soon it gets canceled for good please. I will say this though for the seasons I respect more those always stick with me.
Futurama
Here's a show eventually I wanna fully review on here. One of my personal favorite animated sitcom shows ever!!! Futurama also follows under a few runs situation. Essentially Matt Groening's variation of The Jetsons. You got a space delivery company that goes through all kind of situations. Some of which you would only see in The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror episodes.
Some of my absolute favorite cartoon characters especially Bender are from this show. Not every run of the show was a home run. I will say I do enjoy most of the episodes. I can't wait for the upcoming season. I love we get to see many planets. There's a famous crossover episode with The Simpsons. Futurama is surprisingly ambitious as well as witty at times.
You have a show that goes around an universe. One of the nastiest versions of Santa Claus I ever seen. Several concepts are done so vastly different from those of the real world. Not simply because the show takes place in the 3000s. But because you start to wonder from anything futuristic or time travel theme. Anything from those possibly get invented in real life.
They even made binging shows a ridiculous concept no joke. Futurama is much more than The Simpsons to stand on it's own two legs!!! I'm deeply inspired by this show for a long time. I would even dare to say the most unique creation Matt Groening ever created!!! Although I do also enjoy Disenchantment as well.
