Hello everyone I'm XboxClown89, today we got a more interesting topic. I been wanting to talk about this for a long time. To me, there's two particular shows that are strikingly similar. Don't worry one isn't ripping off the other here. The amount of similarities alone was more than enough to do an entire blog on. Even so I can't justify this alone.
A brief history about both shows before we talk about the similarities. MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch had two pilot episodes originally aired in Liquid Television. Later on, both pilots were aired together since then. This led to a show lasting four seasons before getting canceled. It got a reboot on MTV2 for two additional season with very notable characters before getting canceled again.
I don't wanna get into the unsure future of that show. We don't know if another reboot going to happen or already got canned before airing. It's time to move on to Death Battle, Ben Singer was wrapping up Metal Gear Ben for ScrewAttack now Death Battle. He was inspired by Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior to create Death Battle.
I should point out Spike TV is now Paramount Network before it officially gotten it's own streaming service. A small detail that was kinda necessary to bring up. Death Battle had two similar pilot episodes with a few changes despite being the same original fight. Death Battle episodes got uploaded to a few websites, still true today.
Some people including myself considers Death Battle as a spiritual successor to Celebrity Deathmatch. Honestly, it really isn't difficult to see why either. A lot of matches from Celebrity Deathmatch can be viewed officially through MTV's YouTube. YouTube releases for Death Battle episodes is when everyone else can watch them usually a day afterwards.
Let's get the most obvious similarities out of the way here. Both of them have the word Death in the title. Their concept is virtually fight to the death with celebrities. Celebrity Deathmatch is mostly clay animation style. Death Battle has several styles over the years they done. It still isn't as impressive as Robot Chicken.
Both shows have two hosts that have somewhat similar personalities. Wiz & Johnny Gomez are the more serious, smarter host. Of course the other hosts on both shows is more comedic relief. I actually would've paid for Nick Diamond to take on Boomstick. It's not often when Celebrity Deathmatch does analyze on their fighters while that's all the time with Death Battle.
Celebrity Deathmatch on an average does three matches while Death Battle mostly focuses on one fight. Both shows have ways to spice things up. Yes there are a few rematches as well. The similarities even stretches into some of Death Battle's spin off shows. Like Death Race, which I'm dying to see more of. It is about racing with the possibility of death.
One of the episodes is virtually just several versions of Batman in their respective batmobiles. This is strangely interesting because MTV 2 version of Celebrity Deathmatch done Adam West vs Christian Bale. Also in the original version, they done an smaller scale demolition derby style fight with Nascar racers. The closest fight Celebrity Deathmatch has to.
Of course we gotta talk about Chuck Norris. On Celebrity Deathmatch, Norris was a guest referee in Jackie Chan vs Jean-Claude Van Damme fight. However Damme mistaken Norris as his opponent that ends up killing him. The original referee had to replace him. Death Battle did a more blown out of proportions portrayal of Chuck Norris taking on Segata Sanshiro.
Celebrity Deathmatch had several wrestlers on their show. So far Death Battle only done the late Randy Savage who loss to Kool-Aid Man. Believe it or not, Celebrity Deathmatch actually done an ice theme fight between Ice Cube & Ice T. Which also had Vanilla Ice interrupting the fight. There's a few fights similar in concept to that on Death Battle.
1. Sub-Zero vs Glacius
2. Esdeath vs Gray Fullbuster
Both shows have some team fights as well. Some creature concepts are on both shows as well. Celebrity Deathmatch done The Creature vs Wolfman. Death Battle done Jon Talbain vs Sabrewulf which was a werewolf fight. Another famous example is Sarah Michelle Gellar took on an vampire on Celebrity Deathmatch.
There's two fights so far on Death Battle to actually have vampires. Dracula from Castlevania series took on Ganon from Zelda series. Later on, they fully done vampire vs vampire fight. We are talking Alucard from Hellsing vs Dio from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. A lot of fighters appeared in more than fight for both shows as well.
Another concept they both done is giant robot fights. Celebrity Deathmatch done two fights with giant robots. One of them was followed by a giant woman fighting one of the robots. Mostly had bands facing each other. Death Battle has a couple giant robot fights that I will be listing below to save some time.
1. White Tigerzord vs Gundam Epyon
2. Megazord vs Voltron
3. Optimus Prime vs RX-78-2 Gundam
4. Ultron vs Sigma (briefly)
5. Dragonzord vs Mechagodzilla
Both shows have some truly mess up ways to killing people off. Of course, the possibilities are much higher on Death Battle. Celebrity Deathmatch once done Steve Irwin vs Medusa. Mostly Wonder Woman whose been in three episodes on Death Battle brought in Greek mythology. Sometimes Death Battle is closer to their own community with majority of fights being huge requests for years.
The closest thing Celebrity Deathmatch had to that were Fandemonium episodes. Later a handful of fights selected from polls in MTV 2's version. I should point out DBX originally was done like One Minute Melee where the staff decides who won. Eventually they turned into a show where the viewers decides who wins.
The one time I'm glad I did vote, this might upset some people too. I voted for Inuyasha over Blake in that DBX episode. I will be brutally honest, RWBY was already going down hill. I never cared much for Blake. However I was way more into the shows for Inuyasha as well as the character. So I was very happy despite RWBY being a show off the same website as DB, he won.
Speaking of DBX, they also done Colonel Sanders vs Ronald McDonald. A parody of the fast food rivalry. Can you believe Celebrity Deathmatch done that with Colonel Sanders too? Yeah it was a food theme episode, second match they brought back Colonel Sanders through the time machine. He faced a former employee of his who later started another fast food restaurant named Wendy's.
Celebrity Deathmatch even allowed an machine to face the band Rage Against the Machine before. There's several robots & cyborgs featured on Death Battle. Technology got used in other ways on Celebrity Deathmatch. Another famous example was Ben Affleck vs Matt Damon who had to build things during their match.
Two particular fights played like game shows. The most famous among these even made it on the official Top 10 Celebrity Deathmatch fights list hosted by Jerry Springer. Keanu Reeves vs Brad Pitt, this was a parody of The Matrix with insane visuals for it's time. Some fights on Death Battle used technology to a degree.
1. Ultron vs Sigma
2. Iron Man vs Lex Luthor
3. Dr. Doom vs Lex Luthor (yes the same DC villain)
4. Cable vs Booster Gold
Even time was a factor for both shows just done very differently. For Celebrity Deathmatch, they used an time machine to bring back deceased celebrities for matches. Time depends on characters in the case of Death Battle. Of course, I got to talk about Beavis vs Butt-Head on Celebrity Deathmatch. In terms of both characters found a way to become clay animation versions of themselves.
There's a handful of fights that changed animation styles on Death Battle. Mostly done for comical purposes, still impressive stuff. Like The Mask vs Deadpool was mostly animated. Suddenly it became animated unfinished concept art. Then for a little while it went to live action. Randy Savage's fight briefly became clay animation.
Speaking of Beavis & Butt-Head, some celebrities got voiced by them. Mostly wrestlers including Stone Cold Steve Austin who was the show's scientist. Due to close ties with the website, RWBY characters got their actual voice actresses for Death Battle. The closest Death Battle ever done that. I thought that was kinda interesting to talk about.
Death Battle had a handful of fights happened inside a ring used for boxing & wrestling like TJ Combo vs Balrog. Celebrity Deathmatch had the impressive, bigger scale boxing match Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield. This is strangely interesting because Balrog almost got fully named after Tyson. Personally I still got plenty more things I could've talked about here.
I felt I already made it crystal clear. These two shows are very similar even with very notable differences. Death Battle already has more seasons as well as episodes in comparison. Despite not being inspired by Celebrity Deathmatch. Overtime, I kept getting more reasons to compare the two shows. I know I can't be the only one here not thinking that!!!
