The same port considered to be better than SNES port of Mortal Kombat II. I should point out because Nintendo didn't allow blood in Mortal Kombat 1 in SNES port. Most went towards it's Genesis port which so happens to be my favorite version of it. Nintendo made some changes to allow blood in their port of MKII.
From this point on, SNES MK games technically won people over. However many agree Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on Genesis is superior. I haven't got to play it's SNES port so I can't judge it myself. The more reason why I can't wait for Console Wars to do UMK3 on their show. One interesting fact that not a lot of people know.
Midway had Sculptured Software whose been making SNES ports of Mortal Kombat games. Basically take over from Probe to do MK3 on Genesis. Then shortly after that, they gave UMK3 ports to both consoles to another team called Avalanche Software. To sum it up, they took most of what was done for MK3 on both consoles.
They decided to add things from UMK3 while removing some things MK3 on both consoles had. It turns out there is slightly more levels in Genesis port. This includes a playable character Sheeva who could be fought through a glitch. Yes I know that's a lot to take in I apologize folks. Mortal Kombat ports truly have interesting stories.
Today I am here to talk about a rom hack that's sold both online & in person. To many people this is the definitive Genesis MKII experience in every single sense of the word. I am here to proudly announce to the world or should I say realm of gamers called Mortal Kombat II: Unlimited. This version really does spikes up the game play in many ways.
Let's start with the obvious, how often does a rom hack updated versions of a classic get this treatment? Just look at that amazing artwork that is screaming Mortal Kombat II loud & proud. Probably more than Goro in the first movie right before Johnny Cage punched his nuts lol. Oh sorry lol this version does a lot of things right.
A good amount of the presentation that wasn't originally in this port is present. You have more accurate character ending displays. However this is where things get interesting. In this version you can play as all three hidden characters & both boss characters right off the bat. They did change the famous test mode code.
Now the ? mark spot on the ladder could be one of two things. If you defeat the opponent right before it like normal. You could be doing an endurance match. But if you defeat them with only low kicks, you will face Ermac. Sadly the only known way of playing as him is done on a Genesis emulator. You can change the controls to do combos.
In that regard makes it more like Mortal Kombat 3 but slightly done better at the same time. Mortal Kombat II: Unlimited does have some surprises. This rom hack gives you more reason to play or buy a Genesis. I should be honest to say the difficulty is increased but not as much as later versions of MK3.
There actually exists a rom hack of the arcade version called Mortal Kombat II: Challenger aka Impossible Kombat. At pure random most of your opponents will be replaced by hidden characters & bosses. To sum it up, you aren't very good at the regular game. This version will make you wanna rip out your hair like Homer Simpson.
I would say please go check out this rom hack. Not only it pays tribute to a okay port that's still a lot of fun to play. In many ways even surpasses it's 32X port. The same console to play Doom that most agrees is way better than it's SNES port. People love to forget Sega does get lucky at times. Especially when it comes to Genesis MK games.
